The Yellowjackets broke a three-game losing streak and improved to 7-6 in the University Athletic Association, 16-8 overall. Washington is 12-1 in the UAA, 22-2 overall. The Bears close the regular season at home Saturday against Chicago. Rochester hosts Carnegie Mellon.
"I'm just so proud of these kids," said Rochester head coach Mike Neer, "and I've been proud of them all year." Washington and Rochester have produced some of the UAA's epic battles. A year ago, third-ranked Rochester defeated top-ranked Washington in OT at the Palestra. Six days later, the Bears won when a potential gamewinning three-point goal rattled in and out at the buzzer.
This was Rochester's first victory in the WU Field House since 2001 and its fourth overall at the Washington facility.
Washington clinched the UAA title one week ago with a victory at Case Western Reserve. When Rochester and Washington met at the Palestra on January 23, the Yellowjacket lineup missed both Chmielowiec and sophomore guard Mike Labanowski - each of whom were injured in the JPMorgan Chase Tournament. Washington won, 73-42.
Chmielowiec made two free throws to push the Rochester lead to five with just over a minute left. Washington scored quickly on a layup, then rebounded a missed jumper by Max Kaplan which eventually led to a pair of free throws by Sean Wallis with the shot clock off (70-69).
Rochester inbounded, but turned the ball over when Bill Serle was whistled for an offensive foul. Washington got off two shots in the closing seconds - a miss by Wallis inside the arc and an open three-pointer out of the corner by Tyler Nading. In the mad scramble for the rebound, Rochester's Derrick Fetzer was called for a loose ball foul. That sent Washington's Cameron Smith to the line for a one-and-one with four-tenths of a second to play. Smith missed the first and Rochester called time. His second was off the mark as well and time expired.
