The Tartans completed the regular season at 19-6 overall, 9-5 in the University Athletic Association. Carnegie finished third in the UAA standings behind Washington (13-1) and Brandeis (10-4). Now the Tartans wait to see if that is good enough to earn a Pool C (at-large) bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The tournament field will be announced on Monday.
Ryan Einwag scored 18 points for the Tartans. Jack Anderson scored 14 points, had three blocked shots, two assists, and two steals. Corey O’Rourke had 10 points and four assists.
Mike Chmielowiec led Rochester with 20 points. Marcus Roberson scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The Yellowjackets finished in fourth place in the UAA at 7-7. They are 16-9 overall.
Carnegie scored the first seven points of the game and led for the majority of the half. The Tartans were up by nine, 32-23, at the half. The lead grew to 12 twice in the second half, first on an Einwag three-pointer (45-33, 11:09), then on Matt Pettit’s layup (47-35, 9:39).
The Yellowjackets answered. Chmielowiec sank a jumper, Roberson made two free throws, and Chmielowiec made two more, pulling Rochester within 47-41 with 7:50 left. Einwag hit another trey at 6:44 (50-41) before Rochester made its final charge.
Chmielowiec hit two free throws, then swapped jumpers with Einwag. Nate Novosel made two free throws, pulling Rochester within 52-47 with 3:53 to play. Einwag’s jumper fell off the rim 20 seconds later. Chmielowiec’s three-pointer from left of the key clanked off the rim and in the ensuing possession, Anderson hit a clutch 10 footer in the paint to restore the lead to seven (54-47). Rochester couldn’t close the gap below five after that.
