Senior forward Mike Chmielowiec (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was named First Team All-UAA. Senior guard Max Kaplan (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius) was accorded honorable mention All-UAA status as was freshman center Nate Novosel (Lexington, KY/Lexington). Additionally, Novosel was named the UAA Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year.
This is Chmielowiec’s third straight year with All-UAA honors, his first on the First Team. He was accorded honorable mention status as a sophomore and junior. He is the 13th Rochester men’s player to be named First Team All-UAA in basketball.
It is the first All-UAA honor for both Kaplan and Novosel.
Chmielowiec had a breakout season as a scorer. He led the UAA in scoring, averaging 21.3 ppg. He hit .463 from the floor (163 of 342), .403 outside the arc (56 of 139), and .793 from the line (107 of 135). He added 4.5 rpg., 29 assists, and 21 steals. He topped the 30-point mark four times. In his penultimate game, he scored 32 points as Rochester upended second-ranked Washington University in St. Louis, 70-69. On February 6, he scored a career high 36 points and topped the 1,000-point career mark. He became the 24th Rochester men’s player to reach the elite total. Chmielowiec finished his career with 1,154 points (13th all-time) and 144 three-point field goals (eighth all-time).
In his first full year as a starter, Kaplan led the Yellowjackets in assists (168 – 6.7 per game) and steals (50). He scored 4.6 ppg., hitting .388 from the floor (33 of 85), .424 outside the arc (.25 of 59), and .686 from the line (24 of 35). His total of 374 assists places him seventh all-time.
Novosel finished third on the team in scoring average (10.6 ppg.) and second in rebounding (5.9 rpg.). He topped the club in field goal percentage (.590, 95 of 161) and hit .804 from the line (74 of 92). Novosel had two double-doubles. He set his point high of 18 in the second game of the season – an 81-72 loss to Ithaca. He achieved his rebound high of 14 against the University of Chicago on February 20.
He is the third Rochester men’s player to earn UAA Rookie of the Year honors. Andy Larkin was honored in 2000-01 and Seth Hauben was recognized in 2001-02.
