The award is named for the man who coached basketball and baseball at Rochester, winning nearly 400 games. He served as Chairman of the Department of Physical Education and Director of Athletics. He was inducted into the Athletics & Recreation Hall of Fame in 1992 as part of the inaugural class. The Palestra was dedicated in his name on December 6, 1968.
Chmielowiec’s award was presented by Dick Rice ’65, who played football and baseball at the University and ran track as an undergraduate. Rice won the Alexander Award in 1965.
For the 2008-09 season, Chmielowiec averaged 21.3 points per game, hitting 46.3% of his shots from the floor, 40.3% of his shots outside the three-point line. He averaged 23.6 ppg. in the University Athletic Association and won the UAA scoring title. He broke the 30-point plateau four times, including 32 at national champion Washington University. On February 1, he topped the 1,000 point career mark in a 73-65 victory over Emory. He finished his career with 1,154 points (13th all-time) and 144 three-point field goals (eighth all-time).
Following the season, Chmielowiec was named First Team All-UAA, First Team All-East Region by both the National Association of Basketball Coaches and D3hoops.com. He was named First Team All-Upstate New York by the Eastern College Athletic Conference and a Second Team All-American by D3hoops.com.
Chmielowiec was graduated from the University on May 17 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He is a native of Batavia, N.Y. and an alumnus of Batavia High School.
The Alexander Award is presented to the male member of the senior class who has made an outstanding contribution to the life of the College through his significant achievements in athletics and general student activities; and whose character and leadership qualities have been a wholesome influence on his fellow students. It was presented for the first time in 1956.
