The tie puts Rochester's regular season record at 12-1-3, 5-1-1 in the UAA. The Yellowjackets finished in a three-way tie for the crown with Carnegie Mellon and the University of Chicago.
Earlier on Saturday, Carnegie tied Emory, 2-2, when the host Eagles rallied for two goals in the last nine minutes of regulation. Chicago nipped Washington, 1-0, in overtime, scoring the winning goal on a penalty kick.
The UAA had to go through three tiebreakers to determine an automatic NCAA qualifier. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head competition. That didn't work. Rochester beat Carnegie, Chicago beat Rochester, and Carnegie beat Chicago. The second tiebreaker is points accumulated in road games. That got tossed out the three teams did not play an equal number of road games.
The third tiebreaker is record against the UAA teams in descending order. Washington was next, and all three teams beat WU. The next team was Emory. Rochester and Chicago beat the Eagles. CMU tied Emory (earlier on Saturday) and that result knocked CMU out of the three-way tie. With just Rochester and Chicago left, UAA officials went back to the top of the table. Chicago nipped UR, 1-0, in overtime on October 16. That OT goal gave Chicago the automatic bid. Rochester and Carnegie are now Pool C (at-large) candidates for the NCAA Tournament.
As to the Case match itself, Rochester wasn't able to capitalize on its opportunities. The Yellowjackets outshot the Spartans, 21-6. Corner kicks were even at 6-6. Michael Peacock made two saves in the Rochester goal and the Yellowjacket defense cleared one ball off the line. Case goalkeeper Ben Yabrow made seven stops and his defense had one team save.
In the 64th minute, a shot by Rochester's Ryan Charcolla was cleared off the line by the Case defense. In the 74th minute, a shot by CWRU's Phil DeBauche was cleared by the Yellowjacket defense.
Rochester's best chance may have come 21 seconds into the first overtime period. Steve Welles shook free for a shot, but his attempt smacked off the post.
Case finished the season at 7-8-4 overall, 0-5-2 in the UAA.
