CHICAGO - Rochester had one of its most successful meets in recent memory when the Yellowjackets finished strongly at the University Athletic Association championships at the University of Chicago.

The Yellowjacket men finished in seventh place, just three and a half points out of sixth place. The women’s team produced a fifth-place finish, but closely behind Chicago and Carnegie Mellon.

In the men’s competition, Rochester totaled 751 points. Case had 754.5. On the women’s scoreboard, Rochester had 1,006.5 points. Chicago was fourth at 1,028.5 and Carnegie Mellon was third at 1,063.

Between its men’s and women’s teams, Rochester broke 18 school records, had 12 NCAA provisional qualifying performances, and set 229 lifetime bests.

The men had two top eight finishers on the final day. Kevin Howard was sixth in the 200 backstroke with an NCAA provisional time of 1:53.84. (Dmitry Petropavlovskiy was 15th in the same event at 1:56.60.)

David Mitsche finished sixth on the one-meter board with a 352.70. Kenny Johnson was eighth with a 308.80 and Greg Buck ninth with a 276.85.

The men’s 400 free relay team of Vincent Ness, Wesley Hood, Howard, and Patrick Messmer was timed in 3:11.90 for sixth place.

Bobby McCue was 13th in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:11.38.
