The win moves Buffalo State into Sunday’s regional final against top-seeded SUNY Cortland. The winner of the regional final advances to the Championship Finals at Montclair State University in the coming week. Cortland advances if the Red Dragons win one game. Buffalo State has to win twice on Sunday.
Rochester finishes its season at 33-12. The Yellowjackets won their first two games of the regionals, then lost to SUNY Cortland, 7-1, on Saturday morning. Buffalo State edged St. John Fisher, 6-4, in eight innings to advance to the Rochester game. Rochester’s total of 33 wins is a program record, breaking the mark of 32 victories set last season.
In the seventh, Lopez walked. Julie Joyce bunted and both runners were safe when Lopez beat the throw to second base. Nicole Maher sacrificed, putting Lopez on third and Joyce on second. Rochester walked Jolene Banach intentionally. Sabuda hit the first pitch to the right side, just beyond the reach of Rochester’s Erin Clark.
The Yellowjackets took a 1-0 lead in the first. Katie McLean tripled and came home on Clark’s sacrifice fly. The Bengals got two hits and two runs in the bottom of the third. Lopez singled to short. Joyce tripled to right center. Maher walked and Banach was called out on strikes. Sabuda grounded to Clark but Lopez slid home just ahead of the tag.
Rochester tied it in the sixth and threatened in the seventh. In the sixth, Clark singled and was sacrificed to second by Beth Ameno. Nikki Lee DiSalvio walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Cara Celorio. Liz Slupinski hit a fly ball to deep center that was dropped. Clark scored, Celorio reached second, and Slupinski was safe at first. Brittany Celeste grounded to third, moving the runners up. M.C. Wagner grounded out to end the inning.
In the Rochester seventh, Juliana Nicholson singled through the left side and Samantha Melvin pinch-ran. Lindsay Macaluso bunted Melvin to second. Buffalo State replaced starting pitcher Aimee Fisher with Jenna Freling. McLean reached on an infield single to third that put runners at the corners. Freling struck out Clark, then walked Ameno intentionally to load the bases. DiSalvio skimmed a liner down the first base line that was speared by Kaylee Lekki. She stepped on first to end the inning.
Freling got the win for the Bengals (32-13). She pitched 0.2 innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and had one strikeout. Ameno took the loss for Rochester. In 6.1 innings, she gave up five hits, three runs (all earned), walked five, and struck out 11. She finished her senior season at 23-9.
