Rochester dominated the post-season accolades for the Liberty League. The Yellowjackets won the three major individual honors (Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Rookie of the Year) and took the league’s Coaching Staff of the Year award. Eleven players earned All-Liberty League acclaim.
In the University Athletic Association, five Rochester players were named to the All-Association team. The post-season announcement of an All-UAA team is a first. The UAA has traditionally named a team in March, upon conclusion of its championship tournament. After the 2008 season, the UAA baseball and softball coaches voted to select two teams – an all-tournament team in March to celebrate accomplishments during play, and an All-Association team to be determined at the end of the regular season. Rochester had five players named to the UAA All-Tournament Team in March.
Three players earned identical accolades: First Team honors in each league and one of the Player/Pitcher/Rookie of the Year honors. Senior pitcher Beth Ameno (Cheektowaga, NY/John F. Kennedy) was named the Liberty League Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Liberty League, and First Team All-UAA. She finished her career with a 23-9 record and a 1.25 ERA for 201.1 innings pitched. She had 16 complete games, eight shutouts, allowed 132 hits, 49 runs (36 earned), walked 60, and struck out 254. Opponents hit .178 against her.
Sophomore shortstop Lindsay Macaluso (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart) was named the Liberty League Player of the Year, First Team All-Liberty League, and First Team All-UAA. She hit a school-record .454 (69 of 152), scored 41 runs, had 13 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, and 28 RBIs. She had 121 total bases and a slugging percentage of .796. She set Rochester single-season records for batting average, slugging percentage, base hits, and total bases. She tied the record for home runs in a season.
Freshman outfielder/designated player Kim Grimes (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park-River Forest) was named the Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Year, First Team All-Liberty League, and First Team All-UAA. In 32 games, Grimes hit .376 (second to Macaluso) with 38 hits in 101 at-bats. She scored 14 runs, had 10 doubles, three triples, four home runs, and tied for the team lead in RBIs with 28. She had 66 total bases for a .653 slugging percentage.
Rochester’s coaching staff of head coach Michelle Burrell and assistant coach Margaret Yerdon were named the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. Rochester won its third straight Liberty League title at 8-0. The Yellowjackets finished 33-12 and set a single-season victory record for the third consecutive year. Rochester made its third straight NCAA Division III playoff appearance and was ranked nationally all season long.
The Second Team honorees in both leagues were freshman outfielder Katie McLean (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) and junior catcher Juliana Nicholson (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas). McLean hit .340 in all 45 games (52 of 153), scored 29 runs, had one double, one triple, and drove in 10 runs. She had 55 total bases and a .359 slugging percentage. Nicholson played in all 45 games and started 44 of them. She hit .226 (21 of 93), scored 17 runs, had six doubles, two home runs, and eight RBIs. She drew 13 walks and set a single-season record by being hit by a pitch 10 times. In the field, she had a .981 fielding percentage (328 putouts, 25 assists, seven errors) and threw out six base-stealers.
Six players earned Honorable Mention accolades from the Liberty League: senior outfielder Mindy Altemose (Mt. Pocono, PA/Pocono Mountain East), senior first baseman Brittany Celeste (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls), sophomore second baseman Erin Clark (Mannsville, NY/Sandy Creek Central), freshman third baseman Nikki Lee DiSalvio (Beacon, NY/Beacon), sophomore outfielder Liz Slupinski (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), and freshman pitcher Sara Hutchinson (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park-River Forest).
Altemose played in the outfield and was frequently used as a pinch-runner. She played in 34 games, scored 12 runs, drew two walks, and was one for one on stolen bases. Celeste batted .265, starting all 45 games at first base (30 of 113). She scored 14 runs, had four doubles, one triple, and drove in 25 runs. She led the team in sacrifices with 13, and had a .983 glove in the field (272 putouts, 17 assists, five errors).
Clark started all 45 games at second base. She hit .233 (27 of 116), scored 23 runs, had four doubles, two home runs, and drove in 14 runs. DiSalvio was the everyday third baseman (45 starts). She hit .224 (28 of 125), scored 12 runs, had five doubles, two home runs, and was fourth in RBIs with 24.
Slupinski started 43 games in right field. She hit .264 (34 of 129), scored 19 runs, had 12 doubles, one triple, and 19 RBIs. Hutchinson appeared in 21 games on the mound (14 starts). She had four complete games, four shutouts, and shared two other shutouts. She had a 2.17 ERA for 80.2 innings pitched. She won 10 games and lost three. She allowed 84 hits, 28 runs (25 earned), walked 13, and struck out 76. One of her 10 wins came in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs last week.
At the conclusion of the NCAA Softball Regionals at Ithaca last week, Grimes, Celeste, and Macaluso were named to the All-Tournament Team representing Rochester.
