Will Newnham gutted out a win at #6 for UR.
Over 150 fans packed the University of Rochester squash courts Friday as the Yellowjackets put up a strong showing in falling 8-1 to the top-ranked Trinity (CT) Bantams. It marked just the third time all season that an opponent has taken a point from undefeated Trinity. The point was won early in the match by UR's Will Newnham in the sixth spot. Despite dropping the first two games, 6-9, 0-9, Newnham picked up his intensity and gutted out a tense 10-9 win in the third. He followed that with 9-2 and 9-5 wins to secure the match. On the next court over, classmate Hameed Ahmed was providing some entertainment of his own at number three. Although he would fall 4-9, 9-2, 4-9, 9-5, 7-9, he and Newnham consistently got the crown on its feet and roaring. "That's the first time I've ever experienced what it is like to not be able to hear yourself talk," Ahmed said about the crowd. The rest of the Yellowjackets were beaten by 3-0 scores, but not without putting up a fight. Co-captain Jim Bristow was defeated in the first spot, 9-4, 10-9, 9-1. At number two, newcomer Beni Fischer fell by scores of 6-9, 6-9, 7-9.
