ROCHESTER, NY - The Rochester women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end when they fell to The College of New Jersey, 70-58. For the fourth consecutive year, the team was knocked out in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
Senior center Hillary Klimowicz led the way for the Lions, going seven-for-nine from the field and totaling 19 points and seven rebounds. She averages 20.4 points-per-game and leads Division III in field goal percentage at 68.8-percent.
Junior center Alex Gregorek also had a standout night for New Jersey, with 14 points and 11 boards.
“We had a tough time covering both posts,” said Rochester head coach Jim Scheible, of Klimowicz and Gregorek. “We tried to do a good job on Klimowicz but Gregorek was just a monster out there. “
Senior forward/center Julie Marriott paced the ‘Jackets with 16 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Melissa Alwardt posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Senior forward Alex Porter pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Rochester started out the game on fire. By 11:54 they led 19-9, with 17 combined points from Marriott and Alwardt. The Lions then rallied, going on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 21 with 4:30 left in the half. At the break, New Jersey had widened their lead to six points.
The second half started out with a hard-fought battle for control of the game. Both teams went back and forth in scoring until the Lions went on an 8-2 run at around the 15-minute mark to lead by ten. The ‘Jackets fought back hard and got within seven with 5:40 left to play.
The Lions quickly created a larger cushion, with a layup and a jumpshot from Klimowicz. UR fought to close the gap, but after every basket they made New Jersey responded with one of their own. The final score was 70-58.
“Overall I look at this game as a case of them winning, not us losing,” said Scheible. “We battled as hard as we could, but they just kept making tough shots.”
The ‘Jackets finish with a 24-4 record overall. They graduate six seniors: Marriott, Porter, Marlena Fisher, Rachel Stern, Johanna McNelis, and Jes Waddell.
