Jane Possee (l.) and Marlena Fisher (r.).
Marlena Fisher, who earned eight varsity letters between women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse, received the Sylvia Fabricant Award from the Department of Athletics and Recreation. The Fabricant Award is presented for outstanding sportsmanship in the women’s intercollegiate athletic program. Fisher is a native of Derry, NH and an alumna of Pinkerton Academy.

The award was presented by Jane Possee, the Associate Director of Athletics for Recreation and Wellness.. It was made at the Department’s annual awards banquet earlier this spring.

Fisher’s classmates helped both the basketball and lacrosse teams succeed. Women’s basketball made four straight appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs and advanced to the Sweet 16 round in each of those years. The team won the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament in all four of Fisher’s years on the court.

Women’s lacrosse qualified for the Liberty League post-season championship tournament in 2009, its first-ever Liberty League playoff berth in the sport. The Yellowjackets were 8-8 in the regular season.

Fisher’s athletic legacy was built around her defensive skills and a team-first attitude. She appeared in 100 women’s basketball games and 56 women’s lacrosse games.

She was cited by both basketball coach Jim Scheible and lacrosse coach Liz Monte “...for her selfless and team-oriented attitude that transcends her statistical contributions...”.

Sylvia Fabricant served as the Coordinator of Women’s Intercollegiate Sports from 1944 to 1976. She established teams in seven sports. She was inducted into the Athletics & Recreation Hall of Fame in 1992 (as part of the inaugural Hall of Fame Class). The Fabricant Award was established in 1976.
