Marriott was presented with the Merle Spurrier Award from the Department of Athletics and Recreation. The presentation was made by Athletics Director George VanderZwaag.
The Spurrier Award was another in what has become a long line of awards received by Marriott in this season and previous seasons for her success on the basketball court.
Previously, she was named First Team All-East by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, First Team All-East by D3hoops.com, First Team All-Upstate New York by the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and First Team All-University Athletic Association. Marriott was an Honorable Mention All-American by the WBCA for the second consecutive year.
She topped the 1,000-point career mark on February 1 against Emory University. Marriott finished her career with 1,106 points, sixth on the all-time list. Ten players have topped the 1,000 point plateau at Rochester. She finished 11th in career rebounding, collecting 611 boards.
Marriott is just the second women’s basketball player to be named First Team All-UAA for two consecutive years and the third player to be named either First or Second Team for three straight years.
Rochester was 24-4 this season and reached the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division III playoffs for the fourth straight season. The Yellowjackets were 11-3 in the UAA, setting a single-season record for UAA wins. The women’s basketball class of 2009 won four consecutive JPMorgan Chase Tournament titles and had a cumulative record of 88-24.
Marriott was graduated from the University on May 17 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. The day after graduation, she was honored by the Rochester Press-Radio Club as the Paychex Rochester Area Female College Athlete of the Year. She is a native of Fairport, N.Y. and an alumna of Fairport High School.
Merle Spurrier served in the Department of Physical Education for 30 years and rose to Director of the women’s program. She oversaw activities in 10 sports. Spurrier was inducted into the Athletics & Recreation Hall of Fame in 2001. The award in her name originated in 1961.
