When James Scheible (pronounced SHY-bull) came to the University as its head women’s basketball coach in August, 1999, he brought with him a legacy of success, enthusiasm, and dedication.

He came with the ability to rebuild a basketball program - as evidenced by his work at Elmira College. In 2000-01, only Scheible’s second year at Rochester, the Yellowjackets won the ECAC Upstate New York Championship (16-11), then won again in 2001-02 (18-9).

Rochester’s basketball fortunes rose meteorically in 2002-03. The Yellowjackets were 21-4 in the regular season, earned the East Region’s top seed in the NCAA Division III playoffs, and advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four for the first time in school history. The final record was 24-6. The Yellowjacket run included the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament title, a victory over previously unbeaten and top-ranked Washington University, and a second place finish in the University Athletic Association.

The Yellowjackets reached the Final Four again in 2003-04 where they finished third nationally with a victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the third place game (25-5 overall, 10-4 UAA). Rochester had a multi-week run as the top-ranked team in Division III (both the WBCA/ESPN/USA Today and d3hoops.com polls). The Yellowjackets won the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament again. Scheible was named the Region 2 Coach of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

In 2005-06, Scheible led Rochester to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Tournament as the team finished with a 20-8 record. The following two years (2006-07 and 2007-08), the Yellowjackets once again reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and sported identical 22-6 overall records. In addition, the 2006-07 team reached as high as #2 in the country in both national polls.

At Rochester, Scheible oversees the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for the Department of Athletics and has worked diligently to promote all of the athletic teams on campus. He also sits on committees for both the Susan B. Anthony Leadership Awards and the University of Rochester Student Life Awards.

This is a homecoming of sorts for Scheible. He is a 1983 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School who played for Ed Nietopski.

Prior to coming to Rochester, Scheible coached at Elmira College for seven seasons. He led them into the NCAA Division III playoffs in his last two years there (1997-98, 1998-99). Before that, he led the Soaring Eagles to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York Championship for three straight years, from 1994-95 to 1996-97. Elmira was a quarterfinalist in the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) playoffs in 1993-94. The Soaring Eagles finished as State runners-up three times (1996, 1997, 1999).

Elmira won consecutive championships in the Empire Athletic Association (1998, 1999). Scheible was named the EAA’s Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999, and State Coach of the Year in 1998.

Scheible graduated from Clarkson University in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He received his MBA from Clarkson in 1989.

He served as an assistant coach at Clarkson in 1988-89. The Golden Knights finished 26-7, were runners-up in the State playoffs, and reached the NCAA Division III Final Four. Clarkson was 10-2 in the Independent College Athletic Conference (ICAC) and won the conference title. A year later, Scheible was named the interim head coach at Clarkson. He guided the Knights to a 22-4 record, another title in the ICAC (11-1), and third place finishes in States and ECACs.

Scheible accepted an engineering position in San Diego, CA in August, 1990. He was also an assistant coach at the University of California San Diego for one year (16-8 in 1991-92).

In October, 1992, he was named women’s basketball coach and sports information director at Elmira. He inherited a program that posted 25 wins in the five previous years and had its last winning season in 1982-83 – when Scheible was a senior at Cardinal Mooney.

In July, 1995, Scheible surrendered his SID responsibilities and was named assistant athletic director at Elmira. In that position, he oversaw scheduling, coordinating of officials, team travel, practice scheduling, and eligibility.

Scheible resides in Rochester with his wife, Jacquie, and three-year-old son, Andrew.
