Rochester’s victory, coupled with Skidmore’s 17-5 loss to Hamilton College, puts Rochester into the Liberty League playoffs next week as the fourth seed.
Allie Morgan scored six goals to lead Vassar. Liz Pacheco had three goals. Christine Eaccarino and Moe Byrne contributed two goals apiece.
Rochester improved to 7-8 overall, 3-5 in the Liberty League. Vassar is 9-7 overall, 3-5 in the league. Rochester’s win snapped a six-match winning streak for the Brewers. Vassar had won three straight Liberty League matches, all by a single goal. The Brewers entered the game needing a victory to secure the league’s fourth playoff spot.
With both teams battling for a chance to enter the Liberty League playoffs, the match was tight. Abby Woodward broke a 0-0 tie for Rochester with a goal from the free position with 20:25 left in the half. Pacheco answered for Vassar less than two minutes later, also from the free position. Goals from Dakin (FP) and Hannan pushed Rochester ahead, 3-1. Morgan netted her first of the afternoon with 15:38 left in the period to pull the Brewers within 3-2.
In the last 12 minutes, Rochester outscored Vassar 7-1 to take a 10-3 lead. Hannan had three of the seven goals and Woodward scored two. The lead ballooned to 10 twice – at 13-3 and 14-4 – before Vassar charged. Hannan’s fifth goal of the game put Rochester ahead, 14-4, with 21:49 left.
Vassar went on a 6-1 tear with Morgan scoring three times, Pacheco, Byrne, and Eaccarino once. A free position goal by Eaccarino got Vassar within 15-10 with 14:37 left. Hannan and Morgan swapped goals, keeping Vassar in the hunt at 16-11 with 12:32 left.
Rochester got goals from Lauren Latona and Dakin 39 seconds apart to provide some insurance, 18-11, with 7:38 left.
For Vassar, Morgan won eight draw controls and converted four of five free position shots. Ashley Rey caused three turnovers. Danielle Mondro won five draws for Rochester. Dakin and Marlena Fisher had three each.
Nicole Engelhardt played the first 52:22 for Vassar in goal. She made six saves and allowed 18 goals. Heather Kesselman played the last 7:38, allowing one goal and making one save.
Leslie Dube played the full match for Rochester. She finished with nine saves. Dube had five saves in the first half as Rochester outshot the Brewers, 21-9.
William Smith College scored three times in the last two minutes of the first half – twice from free position shots – to stretch its halftime lead to 8-4 enroute to a 17-8 women’s lacrosse victory over Rochester.[read more]
