His student-athletes achieve excellent in the academic settings as well. Three have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team (as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America). Seven others have been named to the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete Team as chosen by members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. As a team, Rochester has earned the NSCAA’s prestigious Team Academic Award every year sine 1999.
Gurnett’s teams have made 20 consecutive post-season appearances (15 NCAA, five ECAC), have two National Championships, one National Runnerup finish, and have been ranked in the Top 25 every year for the past 25 seasons. Gurnett was selected as the NCAA’s Division III Women’s Soccer Coach of the Decade for the 1980s.
His teams have won 10 University Athletic Association women’s soccer titles and finished third or higher 19 times in 21 years since the inception of the league in 1987. In 2005 and 2006, he led Rochester to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division III Championships. Gurnett was chosen as the UAA Coach of the Year in 2005, as the NSCAA Northeast Region Coach of the Year and New York State Coach of the Year in both 2005 and 2006.
Gurnett is a graduate of Spencerport High School where he played on two Sectional Championship teams. He moved to Monroe Community College where his teams were both ranked #1 nationally and he played in the National Championship game his freshman year. Gurnett then transferred to the University of Rochester where he started for two seasons. He received a baccalaureate degree in economics in 1977.
: He is the National Chair of the NSCAA All-America Committee, a member of the Division III Ranking Committee, and a member of the ECAC Women’s Soccer Tournament Selection Committee.
Gurnett is also the University’s Associate Director of Athletics for Advancement.
Sike has been very active in the Rochester soccer community since 1992. He currently coaches with the Rochester Jr. Rhinos youth club. In 2002, he helped lead the U-15 boys to the United States Youth Soccer Association National Championship. In 2003-2005, he coached the U-17/18 girls to the Region 1 tournament championships and captured the Jefferson Cup Title in 2004.
Upon graduating from the University, he attended law school and earned his Juris-Doctorate at Albany Law School. Admitted to the practice of law in New York in 1997, he presently operates his law office in downtown Rochester.
