When Lia Weiner stepped onto the court last year at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Championships, it didn’t feel quite right. After making it through one match — a three-set loss to Elizabeth Lewis of Chapman College — Weiner knew something was definitely wrong. The following day, Weiner couldn’t drink water, was forced to forfeit her consolation match and went to a local hospital, where she was treated for a stomach ailment.
This year, when the junior returns to Mobile, Ala. for the ITA Championships this weekend, Weiner is confident results will be different.
"I was playing pretty well last year, but I think this year I'm even playing better,” she said. “I'm just being very careful not to get sick.”
Round two of the Championships for Weiner will undoubtedly be tough — eight ITA Regional winners face off for potentially four days of competition. For Weiner, however, the situation isn’t unfamiliar and she’s made adjustments since last October.
"Every year, I get more experience and am always training really hard,” Weiner explained. “I lift consistently now, and I didn't do that last year. Last spring, I was having some back problems, but this year, I feel completely physically healthy, which is good. And now, I even get enough sleep every night!"
Weiner competes in the first round on Thursday against a familiar foe — Kendra Higgins of University of Chicago, whom Weiner lost to last spring. But the thought of a rematch only serves to fuel the Sarasota, Florida native.
“I don't like to lose to the same person twice,” Weiner said. “It's nice because you get to see how they play and what you have to do... And usually the second time around, I have been able to win. I have in the past, and hopefully I can do that again."
If how she’s played thus far is any indication, than Weiner will make waves this weekend. The junior goes will go into the tournament having not lost a ‘regular’ match all fall and having only dropped two sets all season. The only person to better her was teammate Frances Tseng in the title match of a tournament at William Smith College in early September. But that was played in one set, to eight points.
Perhaps most exciting of all, Weiner’s best win came just two weeks ago, when she took out the No. 13 ranked-player in comeback fashion to win the ITA Regional Championship.
As she gets ready to head to Mobile this week, Weiner can’t help but be excited at the prospect of another shot at a national championship.
"It’s a great chance to play against really good players and get my ranking up,” she said. “Obviously, the goal is to win, and that would be amazing.”
