Weiner played strongly. Higgins won, 6-3, 6-4. When the two players met in the first round of the University Athletic Association championships last spring, Higgins defeated Weiner, 6-0, 6-1.

On Friday, Weiner will play Katty Poettcker of Trinity (Tex.) University. She lost to Laura Chen of Carnegie Mellon, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarters. The Weiner-Poettcker match is set for 10:30 am Friday.

Depending on the outcome of Friday's match, Weiner will play for either fifth place or seventh place at 11 am Saturday.
