Academic Technology ServicesInformation CenterApplying for a WWW Account - Departments/DivisionsIf your department or group at the University of Rochester wants to have a home page but you don't have your own Web Server, Academic Technology Services may be the appropriate resource. ATS provides Web space and consultation to all departments within the College without a fee, and other departments can get services for a fee. One of the services offered by ATS is the use of the central web server, www.rochester.edu. Administrative departments, student groups, academic departments, student services, and other groups can apply for an account on this computer, which allows the applicant (called an Information Provider) to store web pages on the server for the rest of the campus or world to see. Usually, one person from a department is the Information Provider. However, it is possible for several people from a single department to have shared access to the web pages.
The ApplicationThe application for an account on www.rochester.edu is available in Taylor Hall, room 2. The form must be filled out by the applicant, signed by a department chairman/director, and returned to Taylor. Below is a list of frequently asked questions regarding the form.Department: This should be the name of the department or group that the web pages are for. For example, if you are creating web pages for a student group, you should enter that group as the department. Type of Service Requested: In most cases, this will only be World Wide Web. That is the only type necessary for home pages. Security Concerns: ATS automatically restricts access to your files so that you and the ATS system administrators are the only ones who can change, move, delete, or add files in your directory. This question is asking whether the information you are providing should only be accessed by people at the University of Rochester, or if everyone in the world should be able to see it. Other such concerns should be recorded here as well. Shared Account: A shared account is established when more than one person needs access to the same files. In this case, each person applies separately for an account and each receives a separate login name and password. Then, an account is set up which the individual users can access from within their individual accounts, and this shared account owns the shared files. Information Provider's Checklist: This section is primarily for the use of the ATS staff. If you are unsure about your own capabilities and qualifications, you can talk to a staff member about these requirements. However, please enter the workstation address if you will be working from a networked computer at the University. The address needed is the IP number of the computer. (For example, one computer's name is stimpy.cc.rochester.edu and its IP number is 128.151.218.26.) If you do not enter this, you will not be able to log onto the server or upload files from your computer. You may wish to talk to a WWW specialist at ATS if you are still unsure about one of the questions on the form. Call 275-2811 for assistance. After the application is processed and an account is set up, one of the UR Web staff members will meet with you for about an hour to provide training on logging into the account and managing files. Information Providers are encouraged to begin training and practice with HTML before their accounts are ready.
