What is Collaborate?

Collaborate is a web conferencing tool that can be used to facilitate synchronous online sessions. The system has the capability to establish audio and video connections between moderators and participants. Moderators have the option to use various tools, such as whiteboard, presentation, application sharing, and web tour within their online sessions.

Collaborate can be used for:

  • Online or Distance Learning courses
  • Holding Online/Virtual Office Hours or Review Sessions
  • Student collaborative group work
  • Teaching from Remote Locations
  • Guest lectures
  • Facilitating meetings with participants in remote locations

Known Issues

The following is a list of known issues with Collaborate:

There is a problem downloading and installing the Collaborate Launcher when you are running Windows, with the most recent security patches. This affects Blackboard Collaborate Launcher, as well as other software packages.

Downloading the installer results in the following error message: The signature of this program is corrupt or invalid

Some suggestions for installing include:

  • Change the "target" location of the file to the default Windows "Downloads" folder.
  • Try downloading the program using a different browser such as Chrome or Firefox.
  • If you have the SmartScreen filter, click View Downloads, right-click the downloaded file, then click "Run anyway."

You can also disable SmartScreen:

  1. Go to Internet Options in Internet Explorer (Tools menu or gear icon) or Control Panel. You can type "Internet Options" in Windows search on the Start menu.
  2. Click on the Advanced tab.
  3. In the settings area, scroll to the bottom where the Security section is.
  4. UNcheck the box for Enable SmartScreen Filter.

Reporting Issues

If you experience issues with Blackboard Collaborate, please report them promptly by sending the following information to

  • Your Blackboard login information
  • Time and Date of your Collaborate session
  • Blackboard course from which you accessed Collaborate
  • Type of issue (connection dropping, audio, video)
