Here are a few sample notes to be used in contacting members of RCAN or LinkedIn:

Mr. Brown:
As a junior chemical engineering major at the University of Rochester, I was pleased to find your profile in the Rochester Career Advisory Network (RCAN). I am currently exploring careers in the pharmaceutical industry and would greatly appreciate a chance to speak with you about your career path, your present position at Big Pharma Company, and the industry in general. Although my primary motivation is to obtain your insights and advice, I would also welcome any assistance you might be able to offer as I seek a summer opportunity in process engineering or research.
The RCAN system unfortunately does not allow attachments, but upon your email reply I would be happy to send you a copy of my resume in order to share a bit about my background.
I hope we can schedule a time to speak by phone in the near future, at your convenience, of course. I look forward to your reply. Thank you in advance!

Sincerely,
Jane Smith

After reviewing your entry in the CAREER ADVISORY NETWORK/LINKED IN GROUP, I was inspired to contact you and ask for assistance with my search for a NAME POSITION within NAME FIELD. As a senior at Rochester it would be very helpful if I could speak or meet with a “career role model” and respectfully request any consideration, referrals, or advice you might offer.  If you respond to this query and share your email address, I will provide you a copy of my resume. When you review the resume I hope you determine my academic and experiential background, including A, B, and C, worthy of your time and agree to conduct a phone or in person information conversation.  After we do speak or meet, I also hope you would find me a strong enough candidate to consider me for a NAME JOB, or related position at NAME FIRM.  If no opportunities exist within your area, perhaps you would refer me to colleagues at your firm or other firms in NAME CITY.  Most important, while your consideration would be ideal, any advice or counsel regarding how to progress down a career path similar to yours would be much appreciated. Please do respond by email to this request, provide your email address, and let me know what would be an appropriate next step.

As a sophomore, contemplating majors in FIELD and FIELD, I was so very excited to see your entry in the CAREER ADVISORY NETWORK/LINKED IN GROUP.  I do hope you will agree to speak with me by phone, meet in person, or answer a few questions via email. Basically, I want to conduct a brief information conversation in order to learn more about your career biography.  I believe the more I learn about how alumni have applied their undergraduate Rochester experiences to successful careers within NAME FIELD, the more academic and career direction I will have.  And, during our conversation I hope to gain your insights, advice and, ideally, consideration for summer internship, shadowing or volunteer experiences as well. Because I do not have direct access to your email, and would like to share my background via a resume, your response to this request to my email address, sophomore@u.rochester.edu, would be most enthusiastically appreciated.

Dear Mr. Green:

After learning that you, a Rochester alumnus, are practicing environmental law, I was inspired to email you.  I would very much appreciate a few minutes of your time by phone so I could ask a few questions about your career biography and seek your advice and counsel.   At this stage, as a junior, I am curious regarding issues related to when to apply to law school, the advantages or disadvantages of first seeking paralegal positions, and how to focus my studies on environmental issues.

Attached is a copy of my resume to quickly share information regarding my academic background. If it is more convenient to continue to correspond by email and you would like me to provide four or five specific questions, please let me know.  While an email response to this request would be welcomed, because you must be so very busy, I will call soon to discuss your reactions to my request for an information conversation.  In advance, thank you and meliora.

Dear Mr. Green:

I was so excited to learn that a Rochester alumnus is practicing environmental law with Smith, Smith and Smith.  I do hope you will answer a few questions about your career biography and offer some advice and counsel.   As a junior, I am curious regarding issues related to when to apply to law school, the advantages or disadvantages of first seeking paralegal positions, and, honestly, I am actively seeking internship or shadowing opportunities for the Spring semester and Summer.

While I sincerely wish to learn more about your career and educational biography, any consideration for internships or shadowing opportunities at your firm would be appreciated. Referrals to colleagues at your firm, or at other Boston area firms, specifically involved in environmental law, would also be much appreciated.  The attached resume provides information regarding my academic and practical experiences. Through a brief telephone conversation I can gain your insights and, after, I hope you feel confident supporting my internship search efforts. If it is more convenient to correspond by email, I can provide four or five specific questions, and we can progress appropriately.  A response to this request would be most welcomed.  In advance, thank you and meliora.

Subject:  Rochester alumnus seeking insights…

Sally Smith, a fellow Rochester alumnus, encouraged me to contact you.  When Sally and recently spoke of my interest in transitioning from the editorial side into marketing, she identified you as someone I should immediately communicate with. Upon review of the accompanying resume you will see that I am currently at Random House.  While efforts to move internally into marketing continue, I have expanded my search to other trade, educational and specialty publishers.  Any advice or, after we have the opportunity to meet, any consideration or referrals to others would be appreciated.  At this stage, the more insight you can give regarding your career in marketing arenas, the better.  While I seek information as well as consideration and referrals, your general advice and counsel is most desired.  I will call to discuss your reactions to my request, but, of course, feel free to continue our email communications

Sally Smith, a fellow Rochester alumnus, enthusiastically encouraged me to contact you.  When Sally and I recently spoke of my active search for marketing opportunities with trade, educational and specialty publishers, she identified you as someone I should communicate with. Upon review of the accompanying resume you will see that I am currently at Random House, have a history of editorial achievements, and now seek the challenges and rewards associated with strategic planning, promotions, press relations, on-line as well as retail marketing.  While I am most eager to be considered for a position with your firm, referrals to colleagues at other houses, and, as important, general guidance and counsel would be welcomed. I will call to discuss your reactions to my request, and, if you are amenable, to arrange a brief meeting.  In advance, thank you for any consideration, referrals or support.

Subject         Account Management Positions with Young and Rubicam

I was delighted to identify you as Rochester alumna who is an experienced advertising and public relations professional. It is with focus that I seek any information, consideration, referrals, or support you might offer.  Upon review of the accompanying resume you will see that I have taken initial experiential and academic steps required to begin and build a career like yours.  By learning more about your professional accomplishments, and respectfully requesting that you consider me for a post-graduation position or internship at Y&R, I know my potential to succeed will be enhanced.

As an intern for Evergreen Advertising and Marketing, I gained knowledge of and contributed to efforts associated with creative and client services areas of a regional firm that specializes in event planning and the creation and implementation of promotions campaigns.  Projects completed for, and knowledge of concepts associated with market research, strategic planning, public relations and Internet advertising, generated through courses completed at Rochester and the University of Bath, are among the assets I offer.   Because my goal is to relocate immediately upon graduation to New York City, serve within entry level or internship roles for a major agency, like Young and Rubicam, your insights, perspectives on effective job search strategies, and encouragement would be most definitely appreciated.  The prospect of joining you and your client services colleagues as you address the needs of clients including General Motors, General Electric and General Mills; and as you effectively interact with media, creative, internet marketing, as well as brand management colleagues is exhilarating.

I do hope after we have had the chance to speak, you will judge my candidacy for opportunities with your firm worthy of your support and that you would feel comfortable referring me to others within the industry who might also offer consideration and advice. Let’s talk by phone or in person whenever convenient for you? I will call you soon to arrange a convenient time and date. Thank you for considering this request.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Brown

MORE SAMPLES THAT CAN BE PERSONALIZED

After reviewing your biography on the NAME DEPARTMENT’s website, I was inspired to contact you and request consideration for a NAME SEMESTER/SUMMER internship.  For me, that would involve shadowing you and your colleagues, my diligently completing a number of projects, and my serving in administrative roles.  Ideally I would be compensated at an appropriate wage, but my motivation to assist with your TOPIC and TOPIC, is so strong that I would be willing to volunteer.  When you review the accompanying resume I hope you determine my academic and experiential background, including A, B, and C, worthy of your consideration for an internship.  If no opportunities exist within your area, perhaps you would, after we speak over the phone or in person, judge my candidacy strong enough for you to refer me to colleagues at NAME DEPARTMENT, other departments or other facilities in the NAME CITY.  Last, but most important, while your consideration for a paid or volunteer internship is requested, any advice or counsel regarding how to progress down a career path similar to yours would be very, very much appreciated. Please do respond by email to this request and let me know what would be an appropriate next step.  In advance, thank you.
