Seniors Want To Know

If you have any questions about career choice or job search strategies call the Career Center and make an appointment with a counselor. In the mean time, we have compiled a few Frequently Asked Questions that may help.

My job search seems to have stalled, what do I do next?
Although it is easier said than done, be patient. It is common not to have any offers until after graduation. Continue to do follow up and stay in touch with your contacts in the field. If you are looking to increase your marketability and develop your network, consider volunteering, taking classes, or completing a post Baccalaureate internship. If your job search still seems to be moving slowly, make an appointment with a career counselor to review your resume, cover letters, and to go over your options.

Why isn't anyone I am interested in recruiting on campus?
Recruiters do not have the time to go to every school in the country to recruit, so they compile a list of their target schools and concentrate their outreach at those schools. That does not exclude students from the University of Rochester, which might be just outside of their target area, from applying to the same jobs as a student from a target school. It just means that we have to go to them, instead of the other way around. Come to the Career Center or look online to find the contact information for your "Hit List" of companies and contact them.

Should I go to the Career and Internship Days, or any other career fair, if there aren't any employers in my field of interest?
It is not a bad idea to go to a career fair even if there are no companies or fields represented in which you are interested. Many of the people at career fairs are Human Resources representatives who may have contacts in your field. It is a good place to make contacts and explore your career options. It is also a good idea to go and observe how a career fair is run and how best to utilize your time at a more field specific career fair in the future.

Who should I ask for letters of recommendation for Graduate School Admissions?
You should ask professors and supervisors who know your accomplishments well enough to describe you and your work and study habits. It is usually better to ask professors from your major classes, but a recommendation from a professor in another department with whom you have worked closely can also be effective.
