Certificate in Management Studies Program
NOTE: With the implementation of the Business minor in the fall of 2008, the Certificate in Management Studies will not be available to students entering in the fall of 2008 and later. See the Center for Academic Support for further information.
Six courses are required to complete the CMS, distributed as follows:
4 CORE COURSES:
- ACCOUNTING: SSB-ACC 201, Principles of Accounting. No substitutions allowed.
- COMPUTER SCIENCE: CSC 108, CSC 170, CSC 171, or ECE 114.
- ECONOMICS: ECONOMICS: ECO 108: Principles of Economics
- STATISTICS: STT 211, 212, STT 213 (prereq = MTH 141), or 216; or ECO 230. (Psychology majors may use PSY/CSP 211 to fulfill the statistics core requirement. Political Science majors may use PSC 200 or 201 to fulfill the statistics core requirement.)***See special note below regarding statistics transfer crdit.***

Students completing this track for a Social Science cluster need to take ECO 211.
This track emphasizes principles and skills appropriate for students seeking careers with banks, investment firms, benefits offices, and other places that analyze and record business transactions. Students may wish to supplement their work with other courses in financial theory or public economics. ECO 263 and 265 are recommended for additional coursework.
Completion of the CMS with the Accounting/Finance track constitutes a cluster in Social Sciences and fulfills this area requirement as long as at least two of the six courses taken for the CMS are ECO courses. Cluster number = S1INT004.
Note: Students are not permitted to use the same course to fulfill the requirements of two different clusters; they may not overlap more than one course between the CMS and a major or minor used to fulfill a divisional requirement; they may not transfer either of the two ECO courses from another institution.
- B. Information Systems Required:
- SSB-CIS 215 Foundations of Management Info Systems
- Plus, one of the following:
- SSB-CIS 225 Data Management
- CSC 172 Data Structures
This track prepares students to make sound business decisions regarding the use of computer technology. This understanding is achieved through a survey of computing topics including hardware and software, programming, systems analysis, and information management, with emphasis on practical applications in the business environment.
Completion of the CMS with the Information Systems track constitutes a cluster in Natural Sciences and fulfills this area requirement as long as at least two of the six courses taken for the CMS are CSC courses. Cluster number = N1INT009.
Note: Students are not permitted to use the same course to fulfill the requirements of two different clusters ; they may not overlap more than one course between the CMS and a major or minor used to fulfill a divisional requirement; they may not transfer either of the two CSC courses from another institution.
This cluster is not available to most Economics majors who are using Economics to meet the Social Sciences divisional requirement.
- C. Marketing Required:

This track emphasizes principles and skills related to the distribution and sale of goods and services appropriate for students seeking careers in sales, marketing research, consumer relations, and other areas having to do with marketing goods and services.
Completion of the CMS with the Marketing track does not constitute a cluster in any area.
- D. Personnel Management Required, any two of the following:
- SSB-BSI 241 Fundamentals of Personnel Administration*
- ECO 223 Labor Economics
- PSY/CSP 262 Human Motivation and Emotion
- PSY/CSP 264 Industrial and Organizational Psychology
This track offers a flexible introduction to concepts and skills appropriate for students seeking careers in areas such as personnel relations, benefits counseling, public relations, and staff recruiting. Completion of the CMS with the Personnel Management track constitutes a cluster in Social Sciences and fulfills this area requirement as long as at least two of the six courses taken for the CMS are ECO courses, or at least two of the six are CSP/PSY courses. Cluster number = S1INT003.
Note: Students are not permitted to use the same course to fulfill the requirements of two different clusters ; they may not overlap more than one course between the CMS and a major or minor used to fulfill a divisional requirement; they may not transfer either of the two ECO courses, or either of the two CSP/PSY courses, from another institution.

This track emphasizes principles and skills of production analysis appropriate for students seeking careers in production planning, quality control, inventory management, and other jobs involving managing the production of goods and services.
Completion of the CMS with the Production track does not constitute a cluster in any area.
- F. Public Sector Analysis Required, any two of the following:
- SSB-LAW 205 *Business Law
- ECO 236 Health Policy
- ECO 261 State and Local Public Finances

- PSC 237 Domestic Social Policy
- PSC 245 Aging and Public Policy
This track emphasizes principles and perspectives appropriate for students seeking jobs involving government regulations, natural resources, and relations between various agencies.
Completion of the CMS with the Public Sector Analysis track constitutes a cluster in Social Sciences and fulfills this area requirement as long as at least two of the six courses taken for the CMS are ECO courses, or at least two of them are PSC courses. Cluster number = S1INT005.
Note: Students are not permitted to use the same course to fulfill the requirements of two different clusters; they may not overlap more than one course between the CMS and a major or minor used to fulfill a divisional requirement; they may not transfer either of the two ECO courses, or either of the two PSC courses, from another institution.
- PLEASE NOTE:
- Students need to submit a CMS Registration Form at Academic Support in order to enroll in the Certificate in Management Studies Program; this should be done no later than November 1st of the senior year .
- Students need to earn a minimum 2.5 GPA in the 6 CMS courses in order to earn the certificate.
- No course taken "S/F" and no course for which a grade of "E" is received may be used to satisfy any CMS requirements, even if the minimum 2.5 GPA is met.
- Students intending to use the CMS as a cluster, in addition to registering for the certificate, must also indicate the appropriate cluster title and number on the blue Rochester Curriculum Registration form . Students are not permitted to use a CMS cluster course in another cluster. The 2.5 minimum GPA requirement for the CMS is also required for fulfillment of the cluster.
- All ECO track courses have ECO 207 as a prerequisite. Other track courses may have prerequisites as well; students should consult departmental Web sites, the Undergraduate Bulletin, or Course Description Handbook before registering for CMS courses to be sure they meet necessary prerequisites.
- Students may transfer a maximum of 3 courses toward CMS requirements. However, since approval is not guaranteed, and certain restrictions may apply, current students should petition in advance for approval to apply transfer courses toward the CMS. Approval is sought using a CMS Petition Form, available in the Center for Academic Support.
Please note: Students wishing to use a transfer credit course in statistics for the CMS must also submit along with the CMS Petition form a detailed course syllabus, which should include the title of the course, text(s) used, instructor's name, place where course offered. The petition form itself should also indicate the credit hours and grade earned in the course.
- Only grades earned in UR courses are used to calculate the certificate GPA.
- Departments may reschedule course offerings depending upon the needs of their majors and instructor availability. Therefore, students are strongly encouraged to plan ahead to be sure they can complete requirements on time.
- Any exceptions to established CMS Program requirements and guidelines must be petitioned using the CMS Petition Form.
- Students who have successfully completed the CMS Program will receive an actual certificate along with their UR diploma. While only one track is listed on the certificate, all registered tracks that a student completes will be noted on the official UR transcript.
