About Academic Support

WHO:

A group of people available to assist you, the undergraduate students in the College, with your academic needs. Whether you talk to a member of the support staff or a professional adviser or counselor, you will meet an individual committed to helping you find access to accurate information, solutions to your academic problems, or opportunities that may highlight your undergraduate years.

In addition to providing you with up-to-the-minute academic information, the staff prides itself on making accurate referrals when the question or problem requires the expertise of faculty members or other campus professionals or services.

We're here to help you...
See us in Lattimore 312 Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Or, call us at 275-2354.

WHAT:

The Center for Academic Support has three main divisions to help you make your college years the most exciting, challenging, and productive years of your educational life.

The Academic Services Counter is located in the lobby outside Lattimore 312 and is open and staffed Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 for your convenience. Come to the Services Counter when you want to make an appointment with an adviser, want to obtain or submit academic forms (unless you can do this on the web, want the answer to a question about rules or procedures, or wonder where you should go for help. Any time you need the Dean's signature, head for the Services Counter. Want to turn in your blue Rochester Curriculum form, or an Independent Study form? The Counter is the place to go.

The Academic Records Office houses the official (and confidential) academic files for all undergraduate students. Your file contains your high school records, semester programs, a regularly updated advising record, copies of correspondence (from you to us and us to you), and copies of forms you have submitted (Major or Minor and Rochester Curriculum declaration form, drop/add forms, Incomplete contracts, and Independent Study forms, to name a few). You may stop at the Academic Records Counter in the rear of the office at any time if you have questions about your record.

Academic advisers and counselors see students on both a walk-in basis and for scheduled appointments. Common reasons for appointments include planning a program for the next semester or the next few years; rearranging a schedule (e.g., dropping or adding courses, overloading or underloading); arranging for a certificate or interdepartmental major; finding out about fellowships opportunities; discussing clusters and how to use the Cluster Search Engine; learning about resources, such as faculty advisers, tutoring, study skills, to help with a specific academic problem. Should you run into academic difficulties, you may ask an academic adviser to work with you throughout a semester to help you turn things around. During your undergraduate years you may wish to spend some time away from Rochester, to study abroad or to work. The advisers and counselors will help you make appropriate plans to insure that your goings and comings are smooth ones.

Whatever academic questions or concerns surface for you, the people in Academic Support are available to help you make sound decisions and use the University's academic resources to the fullest.

WHEN:

The Center for Academic Support is open Monday through Friday from 9 to 5. You can schedule one-half hour appointments with an adviser and expect to be seen within a day or two. (At the beginning and end of each semester, and during registration, the wait may be longer.) Walk-ins are available Monday through Friday from 10 to 11:30 and from 1 to 3:30. You will have access to an adviser for help with uncomplicated situations or urgent concerns. In order to accommodate all students, we limit these contacts to 5 to 10 minutes in length. They are not intended to substitute for scheduled appointments.

You may use our services at any time during your undergraduate years, though your questions and concerns will surely change as you make decisions, firm up your own unique program, and take advantage of faculty advisers and other campus services.

Whenever you decide you want to use our services, we will make our best effort to answer your questions, share our knowledge of programs and procedures, and make the best possible referrals.
