Required Reading

Students should purchase the following books and bring them to Italy.

  • Tuscany in Mind, by Alice Leccese Powers (Vintage Books, 2005). Supplemental reading material will be distributed in class.
  • Comparative Literature 207B—Asish Basu:
  • Volcanoes—Fires from the Earth by Maurice Kraft, Discoveries (Abrams), first published 1993, ISBN 0-8109-2844-2
  • NOTE: Although the book is out of print, a number of copies are available on the internet for purchase ranging in price from $1 to $6 (new $12.95). Students should read it by the end of August, and bring it to Italy.
  • Comparative Literature 207B—Donatella Stocchi-Perucchio:
  • Dante's Divine Comedy (Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso), three-volume edition with original Italian and English translation, Mandelbaum translation (Bentham Books-paperbacks)
  • Cook and Hertzman, The Medieval World View, Oxford, last edition
  • Boccaccio's Decameron (Penguin translation)

History

  • History 228—Gregory Conti:
  • Duggan, Christopher. The Force of Destiny: A History of Italy Since 1796, Penguin Books Ltd. (2007) paperback (688 pages).
  • Levi, Lia. The Jewish Husband, Europa Editions (2009) paperback (176 pages). This book is due to be published in August, 2009.
    If not available before departure from the states Students may wish to purchase it through amazon.co.uk after they have arrived in Italy.
  • Loy, Rosetta. First Words: A Childhood in Fascist Italy, Owl Books (2001) paperback (208 pages).
  • Tomasi Di Lampedusa. Giuseppe, The Leopard, Pantheon reprint edition (2007) paperback (336 pages)

NOTA BENE
The books for the Medieval Unit can be purchased online through Amazon.com. Students are required to study The Medieval World View as an introduction to the unit. Knowledge of the book will be assessed with a brief written test prior to class discussion on the first day of the unit.
