Combined BA/MA in Music Education with Teaching Certification

The Arthur Satz Department of Music and the Music Teaching and Learning Department at the Eastman School of Music offer an option that allows a limited number of undergraduates to get an early start on a Master of Arts degree in Music Education at Eastman. The program normally takes 5 1/2 or 6 years to complete. Along with the master's degree, students receive initial certification in teaching music in New York State public school system. Students interested in the program should consult their academic advisor in their first year at the University, since a detailed program of study needs to be carried out. BA Requirements: Complete required theory, history, musicianship, and keyboard skills, and performance requirements (studio lessons and ensembles) of one of the BA music emphases. Entrance audition/interview at ESM required as part of admission to MA.

Combined BA/MA Program in Ethnomusicology

The 3+2 Program in Ethnomusicology is an innovative collaboration between the University of Rochester’s Arthur Satz Department of Music (on the River Campus) and the Musicology Department at the Eastman School of Music. This program offers students interested in exploring ethnomusicology the opportunity to pursue an accelerated master's degree, offering River Campus music majors the opportunity to delve into ethnomusicology at the graduate level and reducing the cost of a graduate degree for qualified students.

BA requirements: Complete required theory, history, musicianship, and keyboard skills, and performance requirements (studio instruction and ensembles) of one BA music emphases; must include a World Music (MUR 121 or MHS 281 or 282) course. The student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in required courses. An entrance audition/interview at ESM is required as part of admission to the MA.
