Social Sciences Programs and Courses

Study abroad offers many opportunities for students who are interested in the social sciences. A semester or a year abroad can enhance students resume and help them identify career opportunities.

Many students believe that if they are studying the social sciences abroad, they need to be proficient or fluent in a foreign language. This is not always the case since many English-language programs are located in the United Kingdom, Ghana, South Africa, India, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand. Opportunities to study social sciences in English through Rochester-sponsored programs are also available in:

  • Austria
  • Argentina
  • Belgium
  • Chile
  • Czech Republic
  • Egypt
  • Germany
  • Hungary
  • Israel
  • Italy
  • Jordan
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Taiwan

Internships aren’t just highlights on students' resumes; they can lead to exciting career opportunities back in the United States, or even in other overseas locations in the future. Working side by side with lawyers, politicians, and health care professionals abroad gives interns real-world access to the host country’s culture that cannot be duplicated in the classroom.

Our students have participated in a variety of overseas internships including:

  • London, European, and Scottish Parliamentary internship programs
  • Finance and marketing
  • Law
  • Adolescent development
  • Eating disorders
  • Health care administration

For more information, see the internships in Europe page.

Study abroad programs offer a far greater diversity of social science courses than can be found on a US campus. These programs are designed to immerse students in the local culture. Nearly all Rochester-sponsored programs offer courses in the social sciences and humanities. Most programs feature regular field trips to historic sites, organizations, and museums of all kinds.
