How do I actually write the proposal?
You may meet with each of your faculty advisers and academic adviser several times in the process of clarifying your proposal and determining the most appropriate core and supplementary courses. It’s helpful if you take notes on your drafts and date them.
Before meeting with your faculty advisers, have ready:
1. a list of coursework you have completed thus far, and your grades in each course. (You may find it helpful to order a transcript from the Registrar for your personal use.)
2. a list of those courses you are considering as part of your proposal. (Use the online University Bulletin and course schedules to find selections.)
After you and your advisers have agreed on your proposed major or minor:
1. Fill out the proposal form and have it signed by your advisers. Give each of them a copy of your proposal, and keep one for yourself. Also give them a copy of the faculty Recommendation Form. (The originals will be duplicated for faculty committee use, so please either type or print legibly in dark ink.) Bring your completed proposal form and essays to Lattimore 206, where an academic adviser will review and sign your proposal.
2. The Faculty Committee is comprised of representatives of each of The College’s divisions: humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Within a week of the review meeting, you’ll be notified of the Committee’s decision. If your proposal is not approved, the Committee will give reasons and make helpful suggestions. You may immediately resubmit revisions for approval, or if changes are significant, you may need to work with your advisers and resubmit it the following semester.
Because not every proposal is approved, it is your responsibility to ensure that you can complete an already existing major.
