Dakar: Fall, Spring, or Full Year
Students will enjoy the lively nature of this bustling capital city, which displays the culmination of traditional African culture with a pervading French influence. As a French-speaking nation, Senegal presents an incredibly stimulating environment for students interested in accelerating their language learning or taking courses in African studies, international relations, or development studies. Offered through the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), the program is geared toward students interested in continuing French language study, at the same time as learning Wolof, the principal indigenous language of Senegal. Two semesters of prior French language study are required. Additional subject area courses are taught in English. The program is based at Suffolk University's Dakar Campus, and works in partnership with the Baobab Center and the Universite Cheikh Anta Diop. Students who have sufficient proficiency in French may undertake internships in a variety of fields. The program is enriched by field trips to such significant places as the infamous Goree Island, the UNESCO world heritage site where hundreds of thousands of captured men, women and children were rounded up in chains to be shipped to servitude in the New World.
