Study Abroad Programs through the University of Rochester
Study abroad is an integral part of the undergraduate curriculum in The College. About a third of each graduating class completes coursework overseas. Each student has different reasons for studying abroad. You might be inspired by a subject that you have discovered in your classes. Perhaps you hope to develop fluency in another language, or immersion in another culture. Maybe you seek adventure; or wish to pursue career-enhancing international experience. Whatever your motives, you’ll find that your overseas studies complement your academic concentrations, and allow you to develop new interests leading to future research or career endeavors.
Study abroad places you in an intensified learning environment in another country. Classroom instruction and library research may be complemented by homestays, academic internships, field study, or community service. These create a rich context for experiential learning. You will return well-informed about customs and conditions in other countries, and with a keen understanding of what it means to be American.
In addition to describing each UR program, this Guide contains key details about how to apply to study abroad, how to finance your program, and how to transfer credit toward your degree. It includes useful perspectives from past UR students who have studied overseas. Use this book as you would a travel guide: keep it handy, take notes in it, refer to it frequently, and be sure to take it with you when you travel overseas.
Visit us as you plan. While your overseas studies will take you far from campus, they will also allow you to become more connected with the academic community here in The College. We are here to help you make those connections, to work out logistical details, and to share your excitement. We look foward to seeing you soon in the Center for Study Abroad and Interdepartmental Programs in Lattimore 206.
