Financing Study Abroad - Paying for study abroad

Study abroad costs about the same as studying in Rochester. Because we often receive questions from parents about financial issues, we send an informational packet to your parents or guardians after you have submitted a Proposal for Study Abroad.

How will you pay for your study abroad semester(s) depends on whether you choose to go on a UR-sponsored program or a non-UR program.

If you participate in a UR-sponsored program, you will be charged UR tuition and room costs for your semester(s) abroad. You will continue to be billed by the UR Bursar's Office. You may choose to have all the semester charges billed at the beginning of the semester, or to have the charges divided into four monthly payments throughout the semester. Your bill will show any aniticipated financial aid, though it will not reflect the registration for your specific study abroad program.

If you participate in a non-UR program, you will be billed for the UR Study Abroad Fee ($1,200). In addition, you are billed directly for the program cost by the college or university that sponsors your program. Each program has its own fee, which depends upon cost of living in the host country, currency exchange, and on what the program includes (room, board, tuition, etc.). Keep in mind that studying in Paris, London, or Tokyo will prove much more costly than a semester in Jerusalem or Lima. In most cases, you will be expected to pay the balance of your program fee prior to going on the program. This is because sponsoring institutions pay your costs to the overseas program before you depart.

If you study abroad in the fall semester, you will receive your UR bill in July. If you study abroad in the spring semester, you'll receive your UR bill in December; you will not receive a bill in November unless you have a balance from the fall semester. Any balance from the prior semester must be paid in full in order to register for a study abroad program.

If you study abroad for the full academic year, you will not be billed for the entire year at once, but on the basis of charges for each semester. Student Billing Statements are mailed between the 11th and the 15th of each month. Payment is always due by the tenth of the following month. A statement will be mailed each month unless the account has a zero balance and no activity for the current month.

All students abroad who wish to receive academic credit toward their UR degree are placed on Study Abroad Status. Though not on campus in Rochester, students abroad continue to be fully matriculated toward their UR degree. Study Abroad Status ensures that students have a smooth transition overseas and then back to Rochester. It also allows students to continue their UR health insurance coverage while abroad. Inactive Status may not be used for study abroad. Study abroad credits are awarded only to those on Study Abroad Status.

In the event that you enroll in a study abroad program and are unable to complete it, refunds, if any, will be based on the UR's standard refund schedule, and on recoverable costs. The refund schedule is applied according to the calendar of the study abroad program. If you enroll in a non-UR program, no refund is possible for the UR study abroad fee, and you would communicate directly with the program sponsor about the possibility of any refund of the program fee.
