Reunion Class Gift

The Reunion Giving Tradition

Reunion class gift campaigns have a strong tradition of helping the College address urgent priorities. Rochester has achieved its exceptional academic record with one of the smallest financial bases among comparable institutions. These accomplishments have been possible because of the tremendous support from alumni and friends. Today, alumni giving continues to help sustain the level of excellence that defines a Rochester education.

Reunion Class Gift Campaign

Each reunion class will have a class-specific gift campaign. The campaign runs from January 1 through December 31, 2008. Each pledge or outright gift made by reunion alumni to any school or program at the University of Rochester will count toward the class campaign. In addition, pledges may be taken during the campaign year and paid in multiple installments after the campaign is over. The total pledge will count toward the class campaign.

Reunion Class Scholars

Scholarship aid is a priority for the University of Rochester. Through gifts to the College's Annual Fund, reunion classes this year are encouraged to establish a scholarship that will support an undergraduate for four years of study.

Rochester attracts exceptionally bright, broadly talented, and highly motivated students. Tuition, however, is often out of reach for some of them, and so each year the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering spends more than $40 million for financial aid. Providing funding for deserving undergraduates is a priority for the College, as it has been for generations of alumni.

At the end of the Reunion Gift Campaign, on December 31, 2008, for each $25,000 a reunion class gives to the College Annual Fund, the College will establish a scholarship named in honor of the class. Each "Reunion Class Scholar" will receive an award beginning in the fall of 2008.

5th Reunion and 10th Reunion alumni: For each $5,000 (5th) or $10,000 (10th) your class gives to the College Annual Fund, the College will establish a scholarship named in honor of the class.

Matching Gifts

Many employers have a policy that can effectively double or even triple the amount of contributions of cash or securities by employees and their spouses. Donors should ask their Human Resources Department whether their employer has such a program and, if so, obtain the proper forms to forward to the University Gift Office.

Planned Giving

Our life-income gift program offers several ways to help you make gifts while retaining fixed or variable income for life. These benefits include:

*Income for life or term of years paid to you and/or another beneficiary
*Increased income if the life income plan produces a higher yield than the donated asset
*A federal income tax deduction for a portion of the value of the gift
*Avoidance of capital gains tax
For more information, contact Marianne Virgilio at (800) 635.4672 or (585) 273.1167. You also can visit their website at http://rochester.plannedgifts.org/.

Real Estate

Many kinds of real estate are eligible to be used as gifts: Your primary residence, a second home, a farm or ranch, commercial buildings, lots, and undeveloped land. Benefits for giving real estate include:

• Charitable income tax deductions
• Full or partial freedom from capital gains tax
• Ability to still use the property for life, if you wish

Securities and Stocks

Gifts of appreciated securities may offer substantial tax advantages. These include capital gains tax entirely, and an income tax charitable deduction for the fair market value of the securities.
