"As I reflect on my current career as a clinician educator in geriatric medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center, I see the lasting influence that the U of R SMD has had on my professional journey. Without the training in the biopsychosocial model I received at the U of R, I could not be an effective health care provider for my complex older patients (and I probably would have never considered geriatrics as my chosen field). My patients so need me to look at their big picture, not just fixate on what pills I'll give them next. And the dinner I had with Dr. George Engel at his assisted living facility in 1995 is one of the most memorable events of my entire professional life! I have no doubt that I am in medical education today because of the passion my teachers at U of R displayed. Most importantly, I am so proud of my classmates in the Class of 1998. I firmly believe that the U of R SMD attracts the best people--not just the best students with book smarts--because of its patient-centered philosophy and student-centered approach to undergraduate medical education. We need to support U of R SMD in order to carry on its tradition of training the most empathic and well-rounded physicians in the country."—Serena Chao '98M (MD)
