Admissions Volunteer Opportunities

Would you like to represent the University of Rochester at your local high school college fair? Meet and greet prospective students and parents at local Admissions information receptions? Call and congratulate admited students? Check out these opportunities and more for URI volunteers...

College Fairs

Staff your local high school college night. College fairs typically take place on weekday evenings and weekends. You may be asked to staff a fair with an Admissions counselor, another alumnus/a, or on your own. When Admissions forwards invitations to us, we in turn e-mail all volunteers within a reasonable driving distance of the fair. Volunteers should have a good grasp of Rochester's curriculum and programs, but you are not expected to have all the answers! Answers to frequently asked questions are easily obtained through Admissions publications and other resources, available to you, so don't be discouraged if you're not currently an expert on the subject! Admissions will send a box of materials, via FedEx® to the volunteers staffing the fair, who is then responsible for transport, set-up, and break-down of its contents. Volunteers are asked to return leftover items in a postage-paid envelope, and complete a brief follow-up evaluation of the fair.

Interviewing

Share your unique alumni perspective of the University of Rochester while gaining valuable insight about prospective students in your region through alumni interviewing. While not required (but encouraged), interviews are evaluative and are a critical component of the admissions process. Representing the University in this capacity is a professional role with professional standards, and is a fitting opportunity for the truly dedicated and responsible alumnus/a. Interviews conducted either one-to-one, in day-long group interviewing sessions, or via phone, should be representative of the intellectual passion, unique academic experience, and personal attention associated with Rochester. Volunteers are assigned interviews on a rolling basis from September through January, and they are to be completed as soon as possible after you are notified, via e-mail, of your assignments. All interviewers are required to complete an online interview report form for each prospective student assigned.

Regional Admissions Information Receptions

Attend an information reception for local high school juniors and seniors hosted by University of Rochester Undergraduate Admissions staff in your own hometown. Admissions counselors welcome the opportunity to have alumni and parents attend these hour-long presentations where you may meet with prospective students and parents, and even speak to the group about how your Rochester education has impacted your or your child's life, if you like.

Congratulatory and Yield Phonathons

URI volunteers personalize the admissions process by calling applicants to offer congratulations on their admittance to the University of Rochester and encourage their subsequent enrollment. It's also a great opportunity to welcome them into the local Rochester family! You may be asked to contact Early Decision, Legacy (children of alumni), or regular admittance students in your local area. Phonathons begin in January for Early Decision students, whith phone calls to legacy and regular admit students taking place in March and April.

Freshman Summer Send-off Receptions

Host or attend a casual reception for incoming freshmen and their parents before they arrive on campus in August to take their place as members of the new freshman class. Send-offs take place from June to mid-August and present a great opportunity to see some of the same students whom you may have met previously at a college fair, information reception, through an interview, or spoken to over the phone. This is also a great opportunity to share your own college experiences and help answer their most pressing questions about college life!

Identifying and Referring Prospective Students

As an alumni or parent volunteer with a vested interest in the College, we are pleased to have your help in identifying potential applicants from your community. If you know of a high school student who would make a good addition to the diverse student body at Rochester, please let us know. The prospective student may be a family friend, the child of a co-worker, a neighbor, or an outstanding student who has been in the local newspaper for receiving an award, initiating community service, or any other notable accolade.

In addition, if you have information about an extraordinary high school in your area that you feel Admissions staff should visit and/or send University of Rochester admissions publications, please let us know and we will ensure that the information is given to the counselor responsible for this area.
