Young Alumni—Get Involved!

The involvement of young alumni is integral to the success of the College and University. Here are some ways you can make a difference

Host an event

Bringing young alumni together for social and educational events is an important part of our mission. Is there an event coming to town—perhaps an art exhibit, musical performance, or lecture—that would be of special interest to young alumni? Is your city known for a special event such as a jazz festival, sporting championship, or cultural showcase? If you would like to host an alumni event in conjunction with a special local event, please contact Lisa Szczerba Eardman at leardman@alumni.rochester.edu.

Suggest a speaker or program

We rely on you to help us live up to our motto, Meliora –“ever better.” Please share your ideas for provocative speakers and cutting-edge programs that fellow alumni and/or current undergraduates should be exposed to, by contacting Lisa Szczerba Eardman at leardman@alumni.rochester.edu.

Become a career mentor

The unique insight, information, and assistance you can provide related to fields, firms, and industry trends can be invaluable to your fellow alumni and current undergraduates. They welcome advice and may contact you with a variety of questions related to career exploration, job search, and internship opportunities. Visit our new Alumni Career Network, part of the College Alumni Online Community, and create a mentor profile today!

Volunteer on your class reunion committee

Reunions are about celebrating your achievements and those of your classmates since graduation. Whether it's your Zero Year Reunion, your 5th, or 10th, volunteering to plan your celebration can make it that much more special. October 16-19, 2008 is Reunion Weekend for classes ending in a 3 or 8. If this is your year, consider volunteering! Learn more by visiting Reunion 2008.

Help recruit or interview prospective students

Prospective students are increasingly eager to meet with local representatives of the College as they make their way through the college application experience. Admissions volunteers serve as an extension of the admissions counseling staff by recruiting and evaluating prospective students on Rochester's behalf. Visit the UR Involved web site to find out how to become an admissions volunteer.

Volunteer for an affinity group council

Young Alumni Council (YAC) This council is made up of College alumni who graduated within the last ten years and advise the College on programming, events, and outreach initiatives for young alumni. If you are interested in participating in this group, please contact Lisa Szczerba Eardman at leardman@alumni.rochester.edu.

Join your Alumni Class Council Each graduating class has its own class council, made up of volunteers from that class year. These groups keep the class connected between reunions and help recruit committee members in a reunion year. Councils assist with the class web pages, class e-mail groups, and gathering class news. Check out your Class web page or call (585) 273-3576 to get involved.

The Alumni Hellenic Council (AHC) serves as a supportive alumni group to the offices of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and Alumni Relations. The Council meets on a quarterly basis throughout the year. The AHC is made up of Greek alumni who advise and represent undergraduate Greek chapters, sponsor activities, and help advocate the needs and desires of the alumni and undergraduate fraternity and sorority community to the College.

The Multicultural Alumni Advisory Council (MAAC) serves as a liaison between the University and Black, Asian, Latino, and other alumni of color. The Council helps plan and encourages alumni to attend the annual Meliora Weekend, and assists with campus activities, minority student recruitment efforts, mentoring programs, and career development and opportunities. Call (585) 273-5929.

For more information about how you can volunteer, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at (585) 273-5888, (800) 333-0175, or info@alumni.rochester.edu.
