CETL—For Graduate Students
Effective Teaching for Summer Courses: A Workshop for Graduate Students
Summer courses are short, highly condensed, and they typically enroll fewer students than academic-year courses (and sometimes too few). These courses consequently present special challenges to instructors, challenges that can be intensified when the instructor has had little or no prior experience designing and implementing his or her own course.
The workshop on effective teaching for summer courses will consist of 4 half-day sessions to take place throughout the spring semester (13, 20, March and 3 April 2014). Topics to be addressed include:
• Setting course objectives
• Developing a syllabus
o Teaching and learning activities
• Classroom dynamics
• Active learning strategies
• Communicating course goals and objectives to students
• Developing effective teaching practices
By the end of the four-session workshop, students should develop greater knowledge about and confidence in
• Classroom teaching, especially teaching small groups
• Unexpected situations
Interested graduate students should email Jenny Hadingham by March 6 2014 to reserve a place in the workshop.
