Vicki Roth

Dean of Sophomores & Director of Learning Assistance Services

Vicki Roth, Director of Learning Assistance Services (LAS), was named Dean of Sophomores July 1, 2004. In this role, Roth is responsible for the overall academic and social welfare of the sophomore class. The placement of the office of the Dean of Sophomores in LAS promotes programming for sophomores informed by our learning center’s experience in learning and student development. Assisting Roth with her work is the Sophomore Committee, composed of staff members from the Career Center, Student Activities, Residential Life, Study Abroad, and the Center for Academic Support, as well as student representatives. As Dean of Sophomores, she also works closely with the Dean of Freshmen and with the faculty.

Dean Roth came to Rochester in 1990 to establish LAS, a program that provides study groups, study skills counseling, disability support services, and a large roster of course-specific learning groups, which she highlights as one of Rochester's signature offerings. With the faculty, she co-teaches a training course sequence for student leaders of the peer-led cooperative learning groups and has co-authored a text for these courses. She has published articles on the implementation and assessment of this curricular model.

Dean Roth is the Project Evaluator for WeBWorK, an internet homework grading and delivery system developed by our Department of Mathematics. WeBWorK is in use in most of our mathematics courses at the UR and has been adopted at more than 100 other institutions.
