Interested in a career in industry? Considering working at a start-up company or perhaps launching your own entrepreneurial venture? Thinking about an internship as part of your graduate program? Join us for Build Your Future, a series of workshops to help Hajim Graduate Students launch their careers as engineering professionals. Attend one, or attend all, they will help you learn how to effectively network, how to manage your on-line presence, and how to present in a compelling way your skills to potential employers or funders. Additionally, each workshop will give you the opportunity to meet influential UR alums to expand your own networks as well as the opportunity to practice your skills.
The kick-off workshop is hosted by Dean Clark and Dean Heinzelman and features distinguished alums Jack Baron and John Major who will discuss the importance of a professional network to your career.
Jack earned his BS in Neuroscience from the University of Rochester in 1983. He is presently the CEO of SweetWater LLC, an alternative/sustainable energy start-up he joined in 2010. Previously he was VP of Marketing and Division President of various units within Paetec Holding, a Rochester based telecommunications firm. Jack is very active in the Rochester community, serving on the Otetiana Council (Boy Scouts), as well as Habitat for Humanity, MCC Board, and other organizations. Jack is presently engaged in various efforts here at Rochester, including entrepreneurship and technology transfer. He was previously a member of the Arts, Sciences, and Engineering National Council. He and his wife Lisa ’82 have established the Baron Family Endowed Scholarship and are also GEC members. The Barons have 3 children and reside in Rochester, NY.
John earned his BS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 1967 from the University of Rochester. He earned a master in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago, a master with distinction from Northwestern University in 1969, and was granted an honorary PhD from Westminster College in 1995. He is the Founder/President of MTSG (Technologies Solutions Group) in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, an investment, consulting, operations, and governance practice which is primarily focused on the telecommunications industry. In the past John served at a senior level in several cellular communications technology companies including Motorola, and is considered a pioneer of the wireless industry. With over 30 years of mobile computing experience, he holds nine patents and serves as advisor to some of the largest wireless communications companies in the world. John is an honorary member of the Trustees’ Alumni Council of the College. He received the Hajim School Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2010. John and his wife, Susan, reside in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. They have been supporters of the Class of 1967 Scholarship Fund, Campaign for the ‘90s, and “Perfectly Clear” TV Programming at the University of Rochester. The Majors are George Eastman Circle charter members at the Fellows level.
