Graduate Retention Specialist
Dear Graduate Student,
Here at the Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity in Arts, Sciences and Engineering, we aim to foster inclusion among students from first-generation, low-income and underrepresented minority (URM) backgrounds among our various programs of study. Our mission is for all students to feel free to pursue their educational and intellectual interests in an environment that is free of bias and obstacles; to that end, the Kearns Center houses programs for students from middle school through the doctorate.
As the Graduate Retention Specialist in the Kearns Center, I am broadly responsible for assessing the needs of underrepresented graduate students in Arts, Sciences and Engineering, providing advising and guidance, and ensuring access to a variety of resources. In addition to this role, I also serve as advisor to the newly formed, Graduate Students of Color (GSOC) Council. In 2012, students across the institution established the GSOC Council to respond further to the needs of students from underrepresented minority (URM) backgrounds. GSOC holds regular meetings, and is involved in a number of both social and academic initiatives that may be of interest to you. Of note, GSOC members mentor undergraduate students through our Pipeline Mentoring Project (also known as, Pipeline Project). This program connects graduate students of color, current undergraduates of color and first-generation students as they navigate toward successfully completing their degrees and look ahead to further study or work after graduation.
If you are in need of a friendly sounding board or interested in either GSOC or the Pipeline Project, please contact me and we can set up a time to meet. Graduate students, I am truly here for you and will serve as an advocate and resource throughout your graduate studies. My office is in 4-141 Dewey Hall, and I can be reached at (585) 275-9681.
