Kearns Center Programs: Fast Facts 2009

The Kearns Center

  • Since its inception in 2002, the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity in Science and Engineering has served over 70 low-income, first-generation college, and underrepresented minority science, mathematics, and engineering students
  • The chemistry workshops provided by the Kearns Center have led to 68% passing rates and 32% withdrawal rates, in the fall 2007 academic year
  • The Center has graduated three cohorts of college students, with over 90% retention in sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)

Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program

  • The McNair program at Rochester has served over 350 students
  • 35 out of the 83 (42%) students that were served during the 08-09 academic year made the Dean’s List spring semester
  • Over 80% of students enrolled in McNair as undergraduates go on to graduate school within two years of earning the bachelors degrees
  • Rochester’s McNair scholars have earned over 35 Ph.D.s, and an almost equivalent number of professional degrees

Upward Bound Classic and Upward Bound Math Science

  • The Upward Bound Programs at Rochester has served over 100 students
  • 100% (19/19) of students enrolled in Upward Bound as seniors went on to post secondary school upon graduation during the 2009-10 academic year
  • Upward Bound high schools graduates attend a wide range of colleges and universities nationwide including the University of Rochester, Spelman College, Noth Carolina Central, Fisk University and Rochester Institute of Technology
