Northeast Consortium for Faculty Diversity Visiting Dissertation Scholar

The goal of the Northeast Consortium for Faculty Diversity is to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties. The Consortium’s three objectives are to maximize the educational benefits of diversity; to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students; and to enhance opportunities for academic careers to persons underrepresented in the professoriate and persons who have demonstrated a commitment to the elimination of racial disparities in the academy.

In 2012-2013, Arts, Sciences and Engineering (AS&E) at the University of Rochester will provide one dissertation-level fellowship; the Visiting Scholar is expected to devote substantial attention to the completion of his/her dissertation and become actively involved with the host department and our campus.

Terms:
$26,000 for each Visiting Dissertation Scholar-in-Residence for August 15, 2012 – May 30, 2013. AS&E will also provide: computer and library privileges, office space, a faculty mentor, and a cordial departmental atmosphere. The Visiting Scholar will be expected to present his/her work-in-progress at one or more campus or department-wide forums during the year and make substantial progress on completing the dissertation.

Applicants for these 2012-2013 fellowships must have completed all doctoral work except the dissertation before the end of the current academic year and must provide convincing evidence that they can complete the dissertation during the fellowship year.  Applicants must also demonstrate the ways in which working in a specific AS&E department at the University of Rochester will enable completion of the dissertation.

Rochester’s Visiting Dissertation Scholars will be encouraged to build community with other Dissertation Scholars through the Northeast Consortium for Faculty Diversity. The Consortium’s Director, Dr. JoAnn Moody, will provide coaching related to dissertation completion, the job search, and preparation for succeeding in the professoriate. AS&E will cover the expenses associated with the scholar’s attendance at the annual meeting that Dr. Moody organizes each September.
