Parent Orientation 2014
Parent Orientation will take place from August 26th-27th. Online registration for the Parent Orientation is now closed. You may register for Parent Orientation on site on August 26th.
Parent Orientation begins Tuesday, August 26th by helping your child check in to their residence hall between 9am and 4pm. At 5pm, your students' academic journey begins with Convocation with the President and Deans. That day, there is an evening BBQ just for parents, a faculty lecture, information sessions, tours, and other special events lasting until 9pm. Parent Orientation sessions on the 27th begin at 8am and go until 4:30pm. They include programming to help parents gain a better understanding of how this University is run and how to help your son or daughter navigate the systems. This includes sessions with the Dean of Freshmen, Residential Life, Dining, Public Safety, Undergraduate Research, University Health and Counseling Services, Parent & Family Relations, Information Technology and more. At the end of the day on August 27th, there is a break for both parents and students in their respective schedules to have dinner before students return for more programming. The complete Parent Orientation Schedule will be posted on the Orientation website in August.
Please contact the Orientation staff with questions at (585) 275-4414 or email@example.com.
About the Parent Orientation Program:
The Parent Orientation program at the University of Rochester has existed – in some form – since 1988. Parent Orientation at the University of Rochester is a two day program designed for parents and/or family of new U of R undergraduate students, so participants may be parents/family of freshmen or transfer students. The main goal of Parent Orientation is to provide a clear understanding of the resources available for students and parents through the University. Parent Orientation seeks to help parents feel comfortable leaving their students to study and be part of the University of Rochester community.
Parent Orientation is an opportunity for parents to learn how the University of Rochester works to serve students and positively impact student success. The more informed and engaged parents are, the greater our students' success and graduation rates. During this program, parents will learn about student services, including advising services, learning assistance, career resources, and campus security. Parent Orientation is also designed to create an opportunity for parents to meet deans, faculty, and other key University staff members.
The transition to college life for both students and their parents unfolds in stages. We have targeted our sessions to cover information regarding all of those stages. To help you get the most out of your time on campus we encourage you to attend a session covering topics in each stage.
Transitioning has already begun! Your process may have started months ago (or more). The Orientation website and Parents Buzz email newsletter are great transitioning tools. Once on campus, move-in day activities and the Meet the Dean of Freshmen session are an essential component to transition.
The University will become a home away from home for students. Meal plans, housing, personal well-being, and decision making will be addressed in these sessions.
