Parent & Family Orientation 2017

Going off to college is a big transition for everyone. Here at the University of Rochester, we recognize that it's not just the student joining the Yellow Jacket family. That's why we make sure that during Parent & Family Orientation, you can learn more about what the University has to offer not just for the students, but also for the whole family!

Parent & Family Orientation begins Wednesday, August 23 by helping your child check in to their residence hall between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. At 5 p.m., your students' academic journey begins with Convocation with the President and Deans. That day, there is an evening BBQ just for parents & families, a faculty lecture, information sessions, tours, and other special events lasting until 9 p.m. Parent & Family Orientation sessions on the 24th begin at 8 a.m. and go until 4:30 p.m. They include programming to help parents & families gain a better understanding of how this University is run and how to help your son or daughter navigate the systems. This includes sessions with the Dean of First-Year Students, Residential Life, Dining, Public Safety, Undergraduate Research, University Health and Counseling Services, Parent & Family Relations, Information Technology and more. At the end of the day on August 24, there is a break for both parents & families and students in their respective schedules to have dinner before students return for more programming. The complete Parent & Family Orientation Schedule will be posted on the Orientation website in August.

About the Parent & Family Orientation Program:

The Parent & Family Orientation program at the University of Rochester has existed since 1988. Parent & Family Orientation at the University of Rochester is a two day program designed for parents and/or family of new UR undergraduate students, so participants may be parents/family of first-year or transfer students. The main goal of Parent & Family Orientation is to provide a clear understanding of the resources available for students and parents & families through the University. Parent & Family Orientation seeks to help parents & families feel comfortable leaving their students to study and be part of the University of Rochester community.

Parent & Family Orientation is an opportunity for parents & families to learn how the University of Rochester works to serve students and positively impact student success. The more informed and engaged parents & families are, the greater our students' success and graduation rates. During this program, parents & families will learn about student services, including advising services, learning assistance, career resources, and campus security. Parent & Family Orientation is also designed to create an opportunity for parents & families to meet deans, faculty, and other key University staff members.

The transition to college life for both students and their parents & families unfolds in stages. We have targeted our sessions to cover information regarding all of those stages. To help you get the most out of your time on campus we encourage you to attend a session covering topics in each stage.

Transitioning

Transitioning has already begun! Your process may have started months ago (or more). The Orientation website and Parents Buzz email newsletter are great transitioning tools. Once on campus, move-in day activities and the Meet the Dean of First-Year Students sessions are an essential component to transition.

As a reminder, remember that you have a direct resource in the Office of Parent and Family Relations. Parent and Family Relations, a unit in the Office of the Dean of Students, helps parents & families understand and support the student experience, learning, and growth.  This office provides support and assists in orienting parents & families of students within the College.  We serve as a resource for parents & families throughout their student’s undergraduate career.  It is our goal that, as a member of the University of Rochester parent/family community, you feel informed, valued, and respected.

Please contact Parent and Family Relations at (585) 275-5415 or urparents@rochester.edu with questions or concerns.

Settling In

The University will become a home away from home for students. Meal plans, housing, personal well-being, and decision making will be addressed in these sessions.

First Year Possibilities (What will they do?)

Attending these sessions will help you gain a better understanding of the opportunities and support available to University of Rochester students. Essential components of academic progress, personal and social well-being are addressed.

Before you head back home, utilize the Deans and Directors reception to get a few questions answered, grab a business card for future reference, and reflect on your orientation experience.

Don't forget about Meliora Weekend! All parents are invited back to campus in October for the University's largest and most talked about weekend. Learn more about this exciting event here: www.rochester.edu/melioraweekend/.
