About Philosophy

  • What can I know?
  • How should I live my life?
  • What is real?
  • What is a mind? Is it different from a brain?
  • What is good reasoning?
  • Is there a God?
  • Are we really free, or are we controlled by past events?

Philosophy asks fundamental questions and tries to arrive at reasonable answers. The University of Rochester offers undergraduate philosophy courses at all levels, a major, minors, and graduate programs leading to Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in philosophy. Its courses deal with epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of language, history of philosophy, logic, ethics, social and political philosophy, philosophy of science, and philosophy of religion.

The Department office is in 532 Lattimore Hall on the River Campus of the University of Rochester (see maps). On the same floor are Faculty and TA offices and the Department's Lewis White Beck Memorial Library containing over 10,000 books and journals.
