Syllabus
US Policy toward Eastern Europe during the Cold
War 1945 - 1989
Two credit course
Time: Jan 15th – March 4th, 2004
Tuesdays and Thursdays 14:00 – 15:15
Place: Baush & Lomb Hall 173
Course Work:
One 5 - pages paper (with references). Paper should be ready on Feb.19th.
Exam: Essay style final exam will concentrate on general problems taught
during the course.
Final grade will be counted in the following way:
a. 15 points for active participation during classes
b. 30 points for paper
c. 55 points for final exam
Total: 100 points = A
Description:
The course concentrates on general conceptions and actions of US government
toward Eastern Europe. It analyses the role of the NSC and Dep. of State
in supporting President in a process of shaping American policy. The course
will survey specific actions all presidents from this period based on
original American documents. It will especially concentrate on analysis
of the most dramatic and Important moments: 1953 (Berlin), 1956 (Poland
and Hungary), 1968 (Czechoslovakia), 1980 - 81 (Poland), 1989 (all Eastern
Block) and American diplomatic and political response. The course will
explore the role of US policy toward EE within the more general policy
toward the USSR - problem on dependences. The course will study methods
of activity of American diplomacy and problem of Linkage between American
policy and actions undertaken by EE countries in the International and
domestic policy (human rights).
