The Thirteenth Annual Polish Youth Concert

The Thirteenth Annual Polish Youth Concert sponsored by the University of Rochester Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies, the Polish Heritage Society of Rochester, and the University of Rochester Music Department will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. It will take place at the Strong Auditorium, University of Rochester River Campus.

All young people of Polish descent, from preschoolers to high-school seniors, are invited to take part in our annual concert. An accompanist will be available for those performers who need one.

Admission to the concert is free. Parking at the designated lots at the River Campus is free of charge. There will be a reception after the concert. Please, bring your family and friends!

Participants can apply for the Incentive Grants for Musically Talented Youth of Polish Descent, granted by the Polish Heritage Society of Rochester (PHSR).

In the Fifth Annual 2006 competition, PHSR will grant $1,000 for two or three awards in the field of music.

The applicants for the award should be of Polish descent with their permanent addresses within the Greater Rochester area. The applicants, as of May 2006, should be from the 3rd grade of elementary school to their junior year of high school, inclusive. At least two years of prior musical training is required. Participation in the Polish Youth Concert on May 7, 2006 is also required, as the final selection will be based on the performance at this concert. The applicants should perform pieces of their choice from memory. According to the rules, the winners are not allowed to compete for the next year’s awards, but can return to the competition the following year. Thus, last year’s winners can compete again in 2007 and this year’s winners – in 2008.

To apply for the grant, please submit the following documents:

  • Application form
  • Grades from music classes taken during the years 2005 and 2006.
  • Music teacher’s recommendations of child’s music talent and commitment to continue with training (recommendations must be placed in sealed envelopes).
  • Statement of Polish descent.
  • Service for Polish community (participation in Polish events, such as Polish Youth Concerts, Wigilia Programs, Polish Scouts, etc.)
  • Registration form for the Concert

Deadline for submission of the registration forms for the concert and the application forms for the award is March 24, 2006.
