ABUNDANT STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

The Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies provides unique opportunities for interdisciplinary study of the language, literature, culture, history, economy, and politics of the region. The Skalny Center also facilitates formal institutional exchange programs for faculty and students with the prestigious Jagiellonian University in Krakow, and, as appropriate, with other Polish universities. So far, the Center has hosted 16 visiting Jagiellonian University professors and 3 more from the University of Warsaw. In addition, the Skalny Center has hosted several Kosciuszko Foundation Senior Teaching Fellows.

Interdisciplinary majors and minors in Polish studies as well as Certificates of Concentration in Polish and Central European Studies are offered.

Study abroad programs are growing with students attending Jagiellonian University's Summer School of Polish Language and Culture, supported by Skalny Study Abroad Grants. Many students take the opportunity of one-semester studies in Warsaw, Prague, and Budapest.

THE JAGIELLONIAN CONNECTION

The University has a direct institutional exchange agreement with Jagiellonian University in Krakow, one of the oldest and most distinguished universities in Central Europe. This connection facilitates exchange appointments for faculty and study opportunities for students.

Each semester, a visiting professor from the Jagiellonian University teaches a course on Poland and Central Europe and related subjects at the University of Rochester.

Two books were published so far as a joint effort of the University of Rochester Press and Jagiellonian University Press: “Lessons in Democracy” (Proceedings from the Conference on Democracy, Krakow, 1977), ed. by Ewa Hauser and Jacek Wasilewski, and “Polish Formalist School” by Andrzej Korcz.

A VIBRANT CULTURAL VOICE

The Skalny Center sponsors open lectures, films, exhibits, and other events for the enrichment of both students and the wider community. The Skalny Lecture and Artist Series annually brings to the Rochester community the Polish Film Festival, with acclaimed new films from the most recent film festivals in Poland, musical performances, art exhibits, and lectures by Polish writers, poets, and scholars. Speakers have included Gazeta Wyborcza’s editor Adam Michnik, former minister of finance of Poland Grzegorz Kolodko, famous poet Adam Zagajewski, and prominent writer Eva Hoffman. Among our guest artists were: cabaret singer Anna Szalapak, the Krakow Klezmer Band, and internationally famous jazz pianist Adam Makowicz. The Center recently hosted appearances by popular Polish actress Katarzyna Figura.

PUBLICATIONS AND AFFILIATIONS

Active cooperation exists with two affiliates of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies: the Polish Studies Association and the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences, as well as with the The Kosciuszko Foundation, The Fulbright Foundation, and the International Research and Exchange Board. The Skalny Center has close ties with the diplomatic representatives of the Republic of Poland in the United States, (note: add comma after States) including the Polish Embassy in Washington, D.C., the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York City, and the Polish Cultural Institute in New York City. Last but not least, the Skalny Center closely collaborates with community organizations including the Polish Heritage Society of Rochester, the Jewish Federation, and Polish Arts Groups in Syracuse and Buffalo as well as the Krakow-Rochester Sister Cities Committee.

In 1997, the University of Rochester Press and Jagiellonian University Press initiated a series of books dedicated to Poland and Central Europe with the first joint publication “Lessons in Democracy.” The series continued with “Rochester Studies in Central Europe” published at the University of Rochester Press and now has seven titles. One of the books, ”Music in the Culture of Polish Galicia 1772-1914” by Jolanta Pekacz, is a co-winner of 2003 AAASS/Orbis Books Prize for 2002 Best Book in Polish Studies. Professor Ewa Hauser is the editor of the series.
