Student Leadership Series
The Rochester Center for Community Leadership is pleased to offer the following workshops. In order to accommodate as much flexibility as possible, none of the workshops have pre-determined dates and times. Please note that you must fill out a workshop request form and submit it no less than two weeks in advance. A RCCL staff member will try to coordinate a mutually agreed upon schedule. Each workshop has a minimum attendance to maximize the learning objectives of the workshop as well as the typical length of time. All leadership programs are free and open to College undergraduates regardless of class year and previous campus or community involvement. Workshop Descriptions
Meeting Management - Request
Leading a meeting with creativity and efficiency in mind requires preparation, openness amongst attendees, and excellent facilitation. This interactive workshop will improve your strategies for getting your meeting off to a great start, keeping your discussion on target, encouraging cooperation, and accomplishing your action items. Participants will have an opportunity to design a meeting agenda and brainstorm solutions to some of the most common problems associated with meetings. This meeting management workshop is facilitated in the manner of a meeting; that is, the workshop will seek student input and communication, crucial aspects of leading an effective meeting. Students new to leadership roles will find this session most valuable, but all students are welcome. This session may be combined with the goal setting program.

Values Inventory - Request
To be a successful
leader, one must have a firm grounding in their beliefs and values but also a flexibility in understanding others' beliefs and values. This interactive workshop will help participants reflect on what matters to them most, the relationship between their priorities and actions, and how their decision-making impacts long-term goals. They will also find this workshop to be an opportunity to communicate and share their values in collegiate and professional settings.

Netiquette - Request
Email has become the cornerstone of all group communications, whether it is to your group as a whole, administration or a collaborative organization. Being aware of your target audience and the appropriateness, politeness and correctness of your communications is essential for the success of your organization. This workshop will help hone your skills for effective and polite communication.
Length – 60 minutes, Minimum attendance - 10 people
The Diversity Spectrum - Request
Diversity encompasses a wide spectrum of issues including race and ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, sexual orientation/preference, gender, physical and mental abilities, and age. This workshop will allow participants to engage in dialogue about where they are on the diversity spectrum. Workshop activities are designed based on the premise that everyone has something to bring to the experience. The activities will draw on what you already know and challenge you to move beyond that in order to develop skills and tools that will help you grow personally, socially, spiritually, educationally and economically.
Length – 60 minutes, Attendance - 5 to 15 people
Leadership Styles - Request
An effective leader is one who engages members and keeps them interested, motivated and involved. In addition, this leader makes each event worthwhile, productive and fun. Do you consider yourself an effective leader? Is there one Leadership Style that is more effective than another? Come learn what your Leadership Style is and how that affects your interactions with other leaders and group members. This session is beneficial for students with and without formal leadership experience. Gain valuable strategies that will assist you as a student leader now and as a professional in the future.
Length – 60-75 minutes, Minimum attendance – 16 people
Campus Club Connection - Request
One of the many questions incoming students have when arriving to Rochester is “How can I become involved?” The answer? Look at the Campus Club Connection (CCC)-the database with every club on campus. When fully utilized, Campus Club Connection is an effective communication and group management tool for any student organization. This workshop will explore each facet of the Campus Club Connection and soon you will be responding to, instead of asking the question!
Length – 30 minutes, Minimum attendance – 8 to 10 people
Group Dynamics - Request
The term “student group” is an all-encompassing phrase for a wide range of organizations from academic councils to dance troupes to fraternal orders. The dynamics, structure, and overall “feel” are as unique as the organizations themselves and require appropriate management and logistical practices. This workshop will help you create a fitting atmosphere to optimize the effectiveness and impact of your organization.
Length – 75 minutes, Attendance – 15 – 25 people
Marketing Your Leadership Position: From Leadership to Internship - Request
This session will focus on translating your leadership experiences to your resume in order to maximize internship and post-graduation opportunities. Topics emphasized will include connection building with peers and supervisors, shouldering responsibilities, and advocating for one's self. Career goal setting and its application to the search process will be discussed alongside common internship search strategies and tactics. The workshop will also include an explanation of action words associated with leadership and how they can bolster a candidate's internship opportunities.

Program Planning - Request
Do you have a great idea for a program or event, but aren't quite sure how to make it happen? This workshop, extremely beneficial for new leadership, will explore the basics of navigating UR's informational, technical, and logistical systems to facilitate making informed and efficient decisions for your group. By discussing important campus contacts, department policies, and quick-tips, you will learn how simple things can be if you have a plan and use the support systems and tools already in place.
Length – 60 minutes, Minimum attendance – 20 people
Developing Your Communication Skills - Request
Successful leaders need to recognize the strengths in their communication skills, as well as potential for improvement. This workshop will challenge you to look inside yourself and explore your abilities, appreciate the power of verbal communication, become aware of people's responses towards you, become a more effective listener, and become a more influential and effective leader.
Length – 60 to 75 minutes, Minimum attendance – 10 people
Goal Setting - Request
Goals are an important aspect to life as a student. Made on a daily basis, goals can be as simple as getting a certain amount of reading done at the library or as complex as the advancement of the mission of a club or organization. Goals are, in part, what keep students motivated. When it comes to your personal life and your group, goal setting makes the difference between mediocrity and excellence and accomplishment. This session may be combined with the meeting management program.

Out with the Old, In with the New: Making the Transition - Request
Lost letterheads, constitutions, and budgets? Missing membership lists, contact information, and even the keys? How do you maintain organized records and information to hand over? Or are you a new leader in your organization, trying to pick up the pieces a previous leader left behind? If you've ever been frazzled at even contemplating these issues, this workshop is essential. "Making the Transition" will guide you through a checklist to help you assess what has been done (and what hasn't!). The workshop will also help you realize and establish new goals, access all of the resources made available to you and more! You will learn valuable tips and tricks to make the transition effective and stress-free.
