Truman Scholarship 

2017-18 UR Campus Nomination Timeline

(This is a junior-year competition for a fellowship to support future graduate study in various fields in preparation for public-service oriented careers.)

Please be advised that before we nominate you or endorse your candidacy for a fellowship competition, we will perform a conduct and academic honesty check to confirm that you are in good disciplinary and academic standing. Click here for the release/waiver form; please sign and return to the Fellowships Office by October 1.

Monday, September 25: Fellowships Preliminary Questionnaire (FPQ) due. Questionnaire is required to be considered for nomination and must be submitted before the first draft of the Truman online application.

NB: After submission of the FPQ, students should schedule a meeting with the Director of Fellowships (Belinda Redden). Call 585-276-5869 or stop by Fellowships Office in Dewey 4-209B to make appointment.

Monday, November 6: Truman draft application and policy proposal due for initial review; submit via Truman online application manager. After submission, call the Fellowships Office (585-276-5869) to schedule a consultation to take place within one week of submission

Friday, January 5, 4pm EST: Revised draft of complete Truman application and all three recommendation letters due for campus committee review process. For internal selection process, recommenders should submit letters to the secure File Request folder on Dropbox. Reference letters should be submitted on letterhead with a current date (.doc or .pdf formats only). Please label document as follows: Student Last Name_Truman Rec_Last Name of Recommender. Be sure to provide referees with Truman Scholarship Program overview and sample referee form for the specific kind of recommendation being prepared, e.g., intellect, public service career commitment, or leadership potential & abilities.

Early January: Truman Campus Nominating Committee meets to interview candidates and select nominee(s). Interviews may occur via Skype during winter break.


Nominees must schedule a meeting with the Fellowships Office to discuss committee feedback and final revisions.

Thursday, February 1, 2018, 2pm EST: Complete, final, revised Truman Scholarship online application and recommendation letters due for nominees.

*** Prospective candidates are advised to come to the Fellowships Office to review the collection of applications and policy proposals submitted by previous UR Truman Scholarship finalists & winners.
