Undergraduate Research Exposition 2010

This year the Undergraduate Research Exposition will take place on the afternoon of April 23rd from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. The Exposition will be comprised of two venues for the presentation of undergraduate research: a Symposium for twelve oral presentations and a Poster Presentation Fair.

Symposium

The Symposium will include participants selected by judges, reflecting the most accomplished undergraduate work throughout the College.

The Symposium will consist of four concurrent sessions, running from 12:30-1:30 p.m., in four separate locations on campus (to be determined). The sessions will represent the four distinct disciplinary sections of the College: Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Engineering. Three students will be invited to present in each session. We anticipate an allotment of twenty minutes per student: fifteen minutes for presentation and five minutes to answer questions.

Poster Presentation

The Poster Presentation Fair will serve as a place for all undergraduate students who have conducted research in the last year to present their findings to the College community.

The Poster Presentation Fair will begin at 2:00 p.m. (to be determined) and end at approximately 3:45 p.m. Student-participants will offer brief synopses of their work to audience members traversing the room. A variety of hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be available for attendees.

Awards

The Poster Presentation Fair will also include the presentation of the President's Prizes (awarded to the top four presentations from the four disciplinary areas of the Symposium) the Deans' Prizes (awarded to the eight other participants in the Symposium) and the Professors' Choice Awards (awarded to four students participating in the Poster Presentation Fair). The prizes will consist of a plaque and a small monetary award and, more importantly, the distinction of having the work recognized and celebrated. In addition, the Student Association Professor of the Year Awards will also be presented.

How to Get Involved

Students interested in participating in the Symposium and/or the Poster Fair are requested to fill out an application form and submit it electronically to the Office of Undergraduate Research by February 19. All complete student applications will then be reviewed by their Department/Program Chair. Each Department/Program may forward up to three of these applications to the Office of Undergraduate Research for inclusion in the Symposium competition. All Departmental/Program nominees will be reviewed by a faculty-staff committee. Three students from each of the four disciplinary areas in the College will be invited to present a talk at the Symposium. Review committee members will be present at the Symposium talks and they will select one student from each of the four Symposium sessions to receive the President's Prize at the award session.

Finally, whether or not you are involved in undergraduate research, we invite you to attend the Exposition on April 23rd and see some of the exciting things your fellow students are doing. See you at the Exposition in April!
