Flag Display in Hirst Lounge
The flag display in Hirst Lounge is one representation of the diversity of students on our campus. This display is updated each year in November prior to International Education Week to represent the current student population at the University of Rochester.
The list of flags displayed is created from several data sources to establish one list that encompasses students sponsored for study, matriculated student’s citizenships, students who are from US territories and students who identify with a Native American sovereign nation.
In the spirit of inclusivity, there is a petition process each fall where matriculated students may petition to have a flag added to the display if their citizenship information was not captured by the original data pull. Students submitting a petition that meet all of the qualifications will be asked to provide proof of citizenship/tribal enrollment in order to have their petition approved.
Petition for a Flag Display
The petition process for the current academic year is closed and will reopen in the fall of 2020.
Process for Yearly Display Update
Wilson Commons purchases new flags, when needed, and displays flags following these guidelines and the flag protocol issued by Office of Global Engagement:
- There are four distinct displays for flags: UN Recognized States, Other Countries and Regions, Native American Sovereign Nations, and US Territories
- Flags of United Nations Recognized States are displayed in alphabetical order according to the country’s English name
- Other Countries and Regions on the sponsored for study list will be displayed in alphabetical order according to their English name
- Native American Sovereign Nation flags that are found on the Department of Interior Website are displayed in alphabetical order
- US territories listed are displayed in the order of admission to the union
The committee to review the intent of the flag display, the process, and any submitted petitions is comprised of representatives from The College Dean's Office, Dean of Students Office, Office of Global Engagement, Wilson Commons Student Activities, Students' Association Government, International Student Affairs Committee, and the Campus Center Building Manager team.
The list of displayed flags was last updated: November 21, 2019.
